MP3 blog 2014/04/16

blog 2014/04/16 - I'm not fine but that's all right

For the love of Francis Bacon we will get to thee:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140416.zip

Alex Wiley - Vibration:  Has all of my favourite things about Chance on this flow, totally fabulous.

Daktyl - 244:  Love this stompy wonk bass.

DJ Chus - Vuela Paloma:  Ahhh every once in a while you need to indulge in some jazzy deep house.

E.E.K. - Live Jam at The Cairo High Cinema Institute:  OK I have no idea who these people are or what the setup is.  All I know is that this mp3 stumbled in to my computer one day and I've been ALL ABOUT this killer jam session.  And really, on a normal day the words  "jam session" is enough to provoke a mild gag reflex in the back of my throat, but holy hell this is strict tearing up of shit for 17 minutes solid.

Eliot Lipp - Yeah (Big Gigantic Remix):  I haven't been feeling much Lipp as of late, but this is some happy-infused West Coast breakbeat goodness.

Emika - 3 Hours:  Another totally killer track from Emika, the total queen of dark atmospherics.  I feel about this the same way about Ellen Allien's breakout album.  So hot.

Feel No Other - Winter Is All Over You (First-Aid Kit cover):  Sure I don't think this surpasses the original, the song has such depth that any new take on it is apprecaited.

Glass Animals - Psylla:  Is this some darkcore barroom dfimension or what?

Hurray For The Riff Raff - The Body Electric:  Unf!  A big blow of emotional goodness from the new album Small Town Heroes.

Jason Isbell - Cover Me Up:  There is a solemn heaviness on Southeastern, as Isbell emerges in to sobriety with new eyes and soulful humbleness.

Rokia Traoré - Ka Moun Kè
Rokia Traoré - Kouma:  The first half of Beautiful Africa is absolutely stunning.  I think it drags a bit, before the stellar closer, but if you like these grooves the album is totally worth checking out.

The Welcome Wagon - High
The Welcome Wagon - I'm Not Fine
The Welcome Wagon - My Best Days, Parts 1 & 2:  The other week I was all "time to go unironically listen to some Xtian folk music."  Seriously people, just because the guy is a minister is no reason to skip this gem.  Yes, it sounds similar to Sufjan Stevens and is out on his record label, but how many holy holy holy enunciations have you cried along on Stevens' records, and for some reason you're skipping this one just because it's a bit to Jesusy?  Precious Remedies Against Satan’s Devices comes highly recommended, even if you have to pretend it's another soft folk concept album from Steven's pre-overture catalogue.

Tinashe - Ecstasy (Remix) ft Chance the Rapper:  Total ecstatic smooth bass with some great RnB vocals and a dash of Chance to close it out perfectly.

MP3 blog 2014/04/08

blog 2014/04/08 - it's a process

and the result is you:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140408.zip

Carter Juncal - Tapes:  All that bliss-n-bass shit yesssss.

Conner Youngblood - Amelia:  Oh sing me off to sweet sweet rumptuous slumber!

Depone - Test Me:  Tear it up!  Tear up the classic sample junglist sample set and slam that shit up.

Disrupt - Hail The Robots:  Robobreakbeat is oh so delicious.

Emynd x Future - $hit (clean):  The breaks are hot, but aww man the vocal rambles make it perfect.

Fat Tony - Hood Party ft Kool A.D. & Despot:  I love the flows of Kool and Despot oh so frickin much.  They could be rhyming over a chime box for all I care.

Haerts - Wings:  This is the glorious redemption the 80s has been waiting for.

Hayley Reardon - Booze And Blueberries (For Betsy):  OK, this is some quiver-at-the-knees kind of stuff.,

Hominidae - Aloe:  Over the top snap bass production that just becomes a joy.

Jeremiah Jae - Survival ft Oliver the 2nd:  Loving this track.  Really understated beat that works really well and harkens back to the days of restraint.

Lists - Autumn:  Gorgeous energy that pulses somewhere between Bon Iver and Belle & Sebastien.

NO - Leave The Door Wide Open:  These guys are STILL NOT THE NATIONAL, and are still great.

Pharrell - Happy (Robots With Rayguns Remix):  Does what it says on the tin.

Phoenix - SOS In Bel Air (Ariel Pink's Krystal Bamboo Remix):  Not normally an AP fan, but oh the charm of this one!

Sean Dee - Bow and Arrows ft Anna Yvette:  It kind of gushes positivity, but I can still groove at it thanks to the flute trill.

Toronto Homicide Squad - Cold Eggs
Toronto Homicide Squad - Coyote Killer:  Oh god yes some great grind sludge out from the album Nein Bullets.

Washed Out - Don't Give Up:  Sweet post-Beck pop washes from the album Paracosm.

Wye Oak - Mary Is Mary:  New Wye Oak, The Knot!  More brooding!  More emotions!  MORE!

Yellow Ostrich - Neon Fists:  Oh and swoon Yellow Ostrich named their new album after my favourite place to be: Cosmos.

Y/2/K - Not Sad:  Close out on the smooth basslines that yes, are totally sad, and just not admitting to it.

MP3 blog 2014/04/01

blog 2014/04/01 - to hell with this noise

You have every reason to doubt me:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140401.zip

Boddika & Joy Orbison - Dun Dun:  unnnf great pounding minimal tech

Bombay Bicycle Club - Leave It (Acoustic):  Great little folk from the EP of the same name.

Bonobo - Brace Brace
Bonobo - Know You
Bonobo - The Keeper (Banks Remix):  You'd be right to be sceptical.  Remix albums are seldom a must-have, and are most often turid trudges through boilerplate reworks.  But Black Sands Remixed bucks that trend.  OK the remixes aren't ALL the best, but then there's the whole other disc of b-sides which are often as good or better than the main album's material!  Seriously, there are so many winners on here.  Recommended for anyone that loved Black Sands.

Burial - Stolen Dog:  Sometimes Burial's mellow stuff is just too boring for me, but the plods in this one have a certain tenderness I can't escape.

Cloud Nothings - I'm Not Part Of Me:  New Cloud Nothings!  Can't wait to hear all of Here And Nowhere Else.

Da Poet - Other Side ft Ince Sarj:  Like Toxic redux on the trap tip!

Ed Schrader's Music Beat - Pantomime Jack:  SCREAM SCREAM SCMEAM!

EMA - Satellites:  I am SO EXCITED for new EMA Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!  The Future's Void, out now!

Jeremih - F. U. All The Time ft Lil Wayne (Illo Remix):  Ottawa boys does right, does it again.

Mimicking Birds - Bloodlines:  Lush folk from the new album Eons

Mr. Gnome - The Way:  hnnngg 2014 is a great year so far, and some new Mr. Gnome as well?  I'm overjoyed to hear all of Softly Mad.

Museum of Love - Monotronic (Secret Circuit Remix):  Like a slightly more dour Owen Pallet, then wrapped in to the looper and ejected in to an epic pop plodder.  And all of the best.

Samaris - Goda Tungl:  This is sexy and smart and I'll all about it.

Schoolboy Q - Collard Greens ft Kendrick Lamar:  Anticipated collab from the new Oxymoron.

The Black Arrow - The Chase (Jimmy Pe remix):  Slickbass all over the slickplace.  The end.

MP3 blog 2014/03/25

blog 2014/03/25 - eternal distraction

There's got to be a place where they're all just waiting for snuggles:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140325.zip

Being Berber - Anthem:  From the new Anthem EP, a pop jam with a great synth pop underlayer.

Blockhead - Creeps Crouchin':  Probably my favourite jam from 2012's Interludes After Midnight.

Blu - Above Crenshaw ft Cashus King
Blu - Jazzmen:  Originally NoYork ! was from 2011, but apparently re-released last year, I love the breezy queezy bass pulses and the off-kilter pacing of this.

Goldroom - Embrace (Lennart Richter Remix):  I love it when a glorious electro pop song can do so much more with just a little less.

Hakobune - In Your Absence:  Shimmerdrone from the new album Watching The Prescribed Burn

Matthias Schriefl - Der Vorarlberger Problembar:  A live cut, smooth and expansive jazz from Six, Alps and Jazz.

Ne-Yo - New Love:  Quick RnB track on the doo-wop track.  Love it.

Notta Comet - Between I and J
Notta Comet - Gas Cans Can't Warm:  These 2 tracks are one of the most exciting new sounds I've heard in a long while.  From the album Alliums, the streaming rambles over the deceptively solid and thrusting backing hits a sweet spot that feels inimitable.

Odesza - Sun Models ft Madelyn Grant:  Odesza is top drawer downtempo bass all the way.  I've been nothing but floord by their great output.

Overlake - Disappearing:  Like if Beach House had a more surf rock psych sound without compromising the hooks or quality.

Perfect Pussy - Iv:  Another epic track from this year's hardest rocking of women.

Peter Broderick - Roscoe (Midlake cover):  Lovely little cover from a 2008 7"

Phoenix - Chloroform (Sleigh Bells Remix):  Such exuberance hasn't been felt since Sister Wife rocked the world!

Raffertie - Rain:  The new single takes heavy cues from The XX but you all know that it is still going to be awesome.

Scott Xylo - Street Fighter
Scott Xylo - Tra88:  Blipcore breakbeat!!!

Speedy Ortiz - Everything's Bigger:  Eeeeeee new SPEEDY ORTIZ!  Real Hair!  New album!

Stargroves - Hats in the Air:  Close it down with some glorious pop explosion!

MP3 blog 2014/03/18

blog 2014/03/18 - We give a fuck.  2 fucks in fact.

Just two.  Not three:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140318.zip

16bit - Boston Cream:  The Fat Boys are fucking immortal.   Keep it coming with the great bass resurrections.  R.I.P. Darren Robinson, aka The Human Beat Box.

Beck - Morning
Beck - Say Goodbye
Beck - Waking Light:  Morning Phase is pretty fabulous.  A slow-burner folk record, it's not as easily brilliant as Mutations but there is a lot going on here that makes you want to have a drawn out Sunday morning just drinking coffee and reading a good book.  And not a drop of fucking scientology.  Recommended.

Bobby Tank - Gurrl U Know:  WUUURRRRRRRKKKK

Bon Iver x Daughter - Perth Love (Isosine mash):  Mashups don't need to be fully egalitarian relationships.  Sometimes you just want to lay down on a bed of Iver and only let him squeak up when good and ready.

Boy/Friend - Eve ft VA$HTIE
Boy/Friend - Theme Song:  This kind of slinky RnB is what I consider to be the official soundtrack of half of tumblr.

I Am Robot And Proud - Kresna
I Am Robot And Proud - Nothing Normal Sounds Good:  There is a sweetness to these tracks from Touch/Tone that wins me over right from the start. A Just Enough Juice approach lets them breathe and thrive.

Iggy Azalea - Fancy ft Charli XCX:  AND WITHOUR POWERS COMBINED--

Laibach - Across The Universe (The Beatles cover):  Yeah I don't think any of us saw this one coming.

Paige & Borgore x Jay-Z x Wave Racer & Panama - Hit the Street (DJ Topsider mash):  And some msahups can just be a balls-out blender approach and this one pulls it off with grace.

Parra For Cuva & Anna Naklab - Lines:  Keeping it on the mellow, and ducking just below the beat, is a pop groove so sweet.

Rachael Boyd - Aim Too High:  I swoon for this one.

SizzleBird - Stepping Stones:  Magical fantasy breakbeat land!

Skanky - Ember:  All over this deep house.

We Are She Is - And the World:  rec-er-ation!

Young Readers - Homesick:  Close out with some brooding barroom folk rock!

MP3 blog 2014/03/12

blog 2014/03/12 - there is a price for the land of dreams

We accept the costs absolutely:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140312.zip

Angel Olsen - Forgiven/Forgotten:  New Angel Olsen album this year!  Very much looking forward to hearing all of Burn Your Fire For No Witness.  (and what a super title)

Astro - Methods:  The bounce of the beat and the flow has got me all wrapped up.

Bernice & Silly Bed - Oh My Days:  This is like a Tune-Yards track rendered a capella, and is all the more stunning for it.

Blind Pilot - 3 Rounds and a Sound (iTunes session):  Ahhhh total epic folk meltdown.  I love it so much.

Kool A.D. - Lagrimas Blancas:  With the deluge of Kool AD in the past few years, this one rises to the top for me.

LifeAlert - Heat:  Sometimes all you need is a hot little sample set and a dope beat and away you go.

Matmos - In Search of a Lost Faculty
Matmos - Mental Radio
Matmos - Very Large Green Triangles:  The Marriage of True Minds would be on my best of 2013 list had I heard it in time.  It goes beyond a typical IDM album and in to the realm of Herbert sound art and Negativland collage.  Prepare to get sucked in.  Recommended.

Petite Douceur - Paris (Extended Love Club Remix):  Oh the sweet pulsing of ecstatic deep house in the morning.

Rustie - Boatsss:  This track is from the show-stopping BOATS compilation, where an army of awesome producers give their rework treatment to a glorious children's choir.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  There hasn't been a comp this massively impressive since that Dark Was The Night set a few years back.

Son Lux - My Father's Children:  More from BOATS, and yeah, highly recommended.

St. Vincent - Prince Johnny
St. Vincent - Rattlesnake
St. Vincent - Severed Crossed Fingers:  Self-titled new album is a pop playground, and while I don't think it's 100% all there and the greater-than-sliced-bread offering others have dubbed it, I still think it's pretty damn good and worth your time.  Recommended.

Timba Harris - Monarch (i) Totus (i) The Egg
Timba Harris - Monarch (ii) Larva:  Take some Secret Chiefs 3 magic and toss it in to the mythic cauldron that is the Tzadik crew and you get one of the most engaging contemporary and textural compositions.  Highly recommended for fans of contemporary classical, Tzadik, or subversive arcane rituals that will mutate your body and leave a temporary shell of a protohuman.

Times Neue Roman - Sade Is In My Tape Deck ft Donwill & The Airplane Boys (Part 2):  There are a few versions of this track, but this one is all about the summertime chill groove, so let's pop it in and bring on the warm waves.

Yacht - Icarus Complex:  Did I mention the BOATS compilation was awesome?

MP3 blog 2014/03/04

blog 2014/03/04 - let's skip the middleman and go straight to the weekend

Everything is a bead, a bead is a sign:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140304.zip

Anna Meredith - Orlok:  Meredith's productions quickly carved a chasm in to my heart, the space that is a perfect fit for her vast compositions.  This is from Jet Black Raider EP and I just keep fist pumping and shouting more up at no one and everyone.

Artifact - The Way It Do:  Totally funky in all the right ways and you know I love that pitch shifting vocal line.

Dave O'Dowda - All Alone (Remix):  In the future all best pop songs will just start out with a dubstep framework.  I call this Ellie Goulding syndrome.

Four Tet - Jupiters (Happa Remix):  A Four Tet track can be pretty much anything these days, even a slice of minimal with the sedated heart of Ken Ishii.

Just Friends - Avalanche:  The perfect pulses on this track are the ultimate counterpoint for the vocals that floor me.

Karaoke Tundra - Hellacopter ft Bleubird (Jimmy P Remix):  My brain was at some point wonder if some bullshit drop was going to come in but noooooo they did the PROPER thing and stuck to this dope track.  I love this so much.

Lorn - Ghosst(s):  #cellocore for life!  Dark and seething all wrapped around the buoyant strings.

Marnie Stern - Nothing Is Easy
Marnie Stern - Proof Of Life:  I had heard 2 other Marnie Stern albums, but The Chronicles Of Marnia is the one that truly won me over.  It has the frenetic intensity of the others, but has even more quirkiness layered in there.

Mndr - Faster Horses:  This is just superb sugary pop from the opening note, and all sitting on top of a turn-of-the-century Chemical Brothers styled break that oh god I hope makes a big comeback.

PHOX - Barside:  Trembling, staggering epic folk power here.

Sarah Hopkins - Flight of the Wild Goose:  Why so few racks in this release?  Here's your answer!  15 minutes of gorgeousness from Sky Song, a split with Alan Lamb.

Simian Mobile Disco - I Waited for You
Simian Mobile Disco - Put Your Hands Together:  And lest we forget, SMD reminds how they rule the roost on the tech house barn.

MP3 blog 2014/02/25

blog 2014/02/25 - all say yay

think of you ever:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140225.zip

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & Angel Olsen - After I Made Love To You
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & Angel Olsen - Three Questions:  There's not a lot of love for the Now Here's My Plan EP, perhaps because it dredges old songs in new arrangements and people have some kind of FEELING about Oldham?  Whatevs, I have feelings for Angel Olsen, she gets equal billing in my books.

Crnkn - Heart:  Pitch down to the crushing sadness.

Different Sleep - Get Ahead:  We've got your sullen bass, step right up.

Downliners Sekt - Benz:  This is a soundtrack for when we are going to drag a good time out of you.

Emancipator - Natural Cause
Emancipator - Valhalla:  Appropriately moody/grooving downtempo from an album called Dusk to Dawn.

GoldLink - The Heart:  Woah, daddy issues.  Tragic tragic daddy issues.  Ouch.

Haciendo el Mal - Complicado:  From the self-titled album, again I have no idea what is going on here but I am all smiles.

Koloto - Antares:  That back-and-forth glitch filter makes this a deliriously happy bit of IDM sweetness.

Lullatone - The Biggest Pile Of Leaves You Have Ever Seen:  Prepackaged carefree whimsy.  Someone buy this for a bumper on your TV show about an adorable carefree hitchhiker.

Mt. Wolf - Life Size Ghosts (Catching Flies Remix):  Oooo did I mention I loved pitched in vox?

Taylor Deupree - Sleepover:  If you love warm textural ambience I really recommend this album, Lost In The Humming Air (Music Inspired By Harold Budd).  Budd has had a fairly low profile since the 80s, but his influencing tendrils shine here.

The Haxan Cloak - Excavation (Part 2)
The Haxan Cloak - Mara:  Excavation provides that sinister bass sound you always knew you needed.

World Class Art Thieves - All The Time:  Fuck that darkness, time to get up and dance!

Xenia Rubinos - Ultima:  Love the acapella scats all on this one.

Zak Downtown - City's Ours:  Post-West world-conquering ish.

MP3 blog 2014/02/19

blog 2014/02/19 - all your accolades fade

so deep you can see the wobble:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140219.zip

Alina Baraz & Galimatias - Pretty Thoughts:  The first that Galimatias appears on, this is just straight up smooth soul bass.

Farben - Swinn Off:  I love mininmal tech that has awkard sounds melded with a warm kit, that invites you in but then revels in it's minor absurdities.

Four Tet - Ever Never (The Ninetys Remix):  EVEN FOURTET IS TRAP NOW YOOOOOOOO.

Galimatias & Sorrow - Subside:  Smoothed out mind swirling downtempo

Goat - Goatman
Goat - Run To Your Mama:  World Music is a Northern European psycedelic swirl that might as well have been recorded in a San Jose basement or Tokyo high-rise:  it is just love for the psych and fuzz and pomp.  Recommended.

Hashim B - Tokyo To LA Steez:  HNNNNGGG that taiko beat just kills me omg this track is wonderful.

James Ferraro - E 7
James Ferraro - Flamboyant
James Ferraro - SO N2U:  After the Trecartin-infused masterpiece of Far Side Virtual, Ferraro cuts a rather accessible record of synth beats called Sushi and it is a great compromise between the warring factions in his head.  Recommended

Jessica Rotter & Emily Colombier - Animal & Stay(mashup):  Dual acoustic rendition mashup, GO!

John Surman - Kentish Hunting (Lady Margaret's Air):  From The Amazing Adventures of Simon Simon, this is some storytelling jazz shit right here that takes you right in to the book.

Neil Halstead - Digging Shelters:  Bittwersweet somber folk from the record Palindrome Hunches.

Paces - Julian (813 Remix)
Paces - Open Up Your Eyes (Chiefs Remix):  This guy has the contemporary bass wrapped up in his funfur rave pants and holy shit he brought a strobe light a---

Perfect Pussy - Ii:  A perfect storm.

Phoenix - Entertainment (Pyramid Remix):  OK so I didn't get in to the last Phoenix album, but as long as chop it up and mix it in to the sauce it tastes pretty good.

The Eastern Sea - The Match:  An epic chant to the wilderness!

Wet - No Lie (Noah Breakfast Remix ft Spank Rock)
Wet - U Da Best:  These 2 tracks are perfect for their own special reasons and I am just going to roll around in them for a while.

Xxyyxx - Witching Hour:  Our favourite chromosonal configuration will smooth it out at the end.

MP3 blog 2014/02/12

blog 2014/02/12- yes, good job, you did it, now again.

The chime signals your arbitrary reward:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140212.zip

Beyoncé - Superpower ft Frank Ocean:  All the glory.

Califone - The Orchids:  The best Califone songs spin a tapestry around me.  A tapestry I wrap around myself.  OK, I just snuggle under blankets with them.

Cepia - Ithaca:  From the 2008 album Ghostly Swim, the sounds remind of

Cuff The Duke - Cold Blooded Old Times (Smog cover)
Cuff The Duke - Diamond Sea (Sonic Youth cover):  The whole of it doesn't entice me, but these two covers from In Our Time are 2 of my favourite songs ever, and I always want a good go at them.

DC Zee - Whirlwind Booty:  BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY BOOTY

Marble - L.L (Ta-ku Remix):  Ta-ku rocks my breakbeat world oh so much.

Mississippi Fred Mcdowell - John Henry (live):  A great track from the classic Live At the Gaslight from 2000, which ended up being his final performance.

Mouse On Mars - Vax:  WOW is an awkwa\rd assemblage of beats that works itself out like a psychedelic mixtape.

Philip Glass - Knee 1 (Nosaj Thing Remix)
Philip Glass - Music in Twelve Parts, Part 1 (My Great Ghost Remix):  I really enjoy the Rework: Philip Glass Remixed album, and you just might too.  Do you enjoy Philip Glass?  Do you enjoy contemporary electronic beat producers?  If you answered yes to both of those questions, it's really hard to ignore this release.  If you said no to either, then shuffle along.  The album isn't a perfect whole, but it's up there with the Tortoise remixes album from a decade ago in terms of an important body of work being interpreted in such a way that reveals a pulse-taking of today's producers.  Recommended.

Ryan Teague - Cell Cycle
Ryan Teague - Games for Two
Ryan Teague - Tetramery:  If you enjoy the classic pulsings of Glass you might also really love this Teague album Field Drawings.  The 21st century rhythmic practices are all over these compositions.  Recommended.

Sleepyhead - My Lyf:  The skittery footwerk scene only brings me in when I feel like it's tied my brain in to knots like an oldschool U-Ziq track, and this one pulls on that for sure.

St. Lucia - All Eyes On You (Pacific Air Remix):  This comes together so simply, but it's all the pop ecstasy you demand.

Tul-Pa - Dazed:  I wanna be sedated and this is what I will count away with.

Wild Ones - Paia (My Body Remix):  A track after my own heart.

Zelda - Link's Awakening Sword Search (Janski Beeeats Remix):  More gamer-core betas and HEY, did you know they made Zelda games on systems other than the NES?  Huh, the more you know…

MP3 blog 2014/02/04

blog 2014/02/04 - it's a little party and you can't go just yet

This part of us will never die:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140204.zip

Alina Baraz & Galimatias - Make You Feel (remix):  OK so I lost who is the producer on this, but urgency dictates that you need to be seduced Right. This. Second.

Dillon Francis - Without You ft T.E.E.D (ETC!ETC! X Jesse Slayter Remix):  Sick bubble pop explodes all over the place.

Drake vs Baauer & RL Grime - Infinite Starts (Hood Internet mashup):  This pairing will just kill it on the dance floor.

Michalis Moschoutis - Act I:  A subtlely shifting inner whirwind of acoustic bliss.

Nitty Scott - Language Arts:  Love the 94 sounds boom bap flute beat, so good.

Noah D - Roll Out (The Jeep Remix):  That squelch box bass just kills it for me.  What a classic breakbeat track needs.  Now cut this up.

Robag Wruhme - Donnerkuppel
Robag Wruhme - Polch Dutto:  Sometimes minimal tech is full of so much elation stuck between the clicks and whirrs, and like Tiefschwartz, Wruhme has that formula nailed to magical perfection.

Robin Thicke - Give It 2 U (Trippy Turtle Remix):  I have never heard any Thicke before, so not sure if it normally has those delicious water drop click sounds, but lay on the claps and squeaky vocals and shake it!

Seams - Platz:  Groove on the clicky IDM rush of it all, old school.

Slow Machete - Until Your Father Sleeps:  The vocals here just reverberate through me to the base of what I know my self to be.  I can't overstake how epic this makes me feel.

Son Lux - Lost It To Trying:  The perfect balance of quirk and slick produced bass, wrapped in synths and horns?  Oh yes sign me up.  More.

Talmud Beach - How Long:  The guy from Black Mountain will never be able to enter a witness protection program.  Wherever he goes, his distinctive voice will summon swarms of admiring fans to his feet.

Tei Shi - M&Ms:  Glorious sensual tension that you could almost touch.

The Breeders - Saints (live in Stockholm):  The Breeders toured on Last Splash's re-release!  Don't critique, just dance!

The Range - Loftmane:  More of the dark and critical breakbeat jazz.

The Weather Station - Traveller:  WS stuff seems so fragile that it could shatter any second under the weight of it's own sadness, yet always pulls through to the end.  It leaves me exhausted and joyous.

Weaves - Hulahoop:  We grew up on Ween too and fuck you let's smash shit and pass out.

MP3 blog 2014/01/28

blog 2014/01/28 - at -40 we are all equal

math it up:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140128.zip

Against Me! - Paralytic States
Against Me! - Talking Transgender Dysphoria Blues:  The new album Transgender Dysphoria Blues is an incredible ride.  Storytelling intensity that rivals Okkervil River with a sound that scours and is free from polish, letting all the fury through.   Recommended.

Bill Vanloo - Tones (For Sarah):  The warm sweet pulses dance along the clicks and it's the exact blanket I want to wake up with.

Cosmo Sheldrake - I Threw A Rock Into The Sea:  Deep in my heart is a locked room filled with rainbows and once you have passed the harrowing trials, you must sing this song to enter.

Fulgeance - Square (Oknai Remix):  No tricks no gimmicks no waiting for the fucking drop.

Galleries - Midnight Rush:  Bistro rock of grand proportions, from the new album No Miracles.

Goldroom - Embrace (Keljet Remix):  This hits all the parts of The Recipe For Pop Satisfaction.

Hella Comet - Tinker Boat:  Remember the 90s when DGC grunge was all the coolest shit around?

Ladyfrnd - Un Petit Message:  Will you be my ladyfrnd [y] [n] ?

Liz - All Them Boys:  Soulful garage is the undersung hero of sexy dance music, furreals.

Night Beds - 22:  Short and solemn and rests down just right.

Okkervil River - Down Down the Deep River
Okkervil River - Stay Young:  Oh what is that?  The Silver Gymnasium is the new Okkervil River album?  OMG YES PLEASE.

Oskar Schuster - Matilda (Live)
Oskar Schuster - Paris Montparnasse:  2 pieces of solo piano that grip me the whole way through

Painted Palms - Here It Comes:  Even the plinky plonk can become a sing-along anthem.

Psapp - Wet Salt (Radio Edit):  The sweet quirky beats of PSAPP have been around for a long while now and I'm so glad their new stuff is still so delightful.

Raz Ohara - Hymn (Hardman Remix):  This guy is panting.  Panting for you.  Hear him pant all over the room!  Like if Prince was LITERALLY stroking it while hopping on the beat.

Reklein - Harland:  Total blissed out breakbeat on this one.

Rhian Sheehan - Somnus (Hummel's 'Shh, Soma is Sleeping' Remix):  And then we get deep in to my dreams and just float away for the rest of it.

MP3 blog 2014/01/21

blog 2014/01/21 - we don't believe it to be but we are wishing for it so hard to spite the rest

good day and hello again:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140121.zip

Call To Mind - A Family Sketch :  Whistful epicness from The Winter Is White.

Crashworship - Pyru (Edenflux Remix):  This is from 2009 soulseekers comp and holy shit is this awesome.

Del Bel - Dusk Light:  From the 2011 album Oneiric.

Disclosure - When A Fire Starts To Burn (DÜME Remix):  Awww shit, this is probably my favourite track of the year so far.  Totally amazing.

Débruit & Alsarah - Alkoan Baladi :  Sick poppy and oh so sweet.

Eminem - Love Game ft Kendrick Lamar:  Not an Eminem fan, but this is here for the Kendrick and the beat.  Totally purile, but oh the flow…

Erika Spring - HAG (Aeroplane Remix):  Totally smokey and subdued electro pop.

Four Tet - Parallel Jalebi:  Pulsing smooth from the new album Beautiful Rewind.

French Horn Rebellion & Savoir Adore - The Fire:  2 of my favourite bring the massive joyous cries of forever to the masses.

Grimes - Skin (Four Tet's Human Once Again Remix):  The perfect rework of Grimes that I think is possible.

Grizzly Bear - Will Calls (Diplo Remix):  Thus proving that pretty much anyting can be a trappy slammer.

Joaan - Out Of Slang:  I still love dubsteppy stuff that sticks to the purity of the progamming, the dark sounds, the twirky little progressions, all that 2005 ish.

Jon Kennedy - Electronic Sound Pictures:  All these years later and JK still pulls out the epic soundtrack feels.

Just Out Zonin - Tori Amos:  oh hey did I mention that ANYTHING CAN BE A TRAP REMIX?

Karol Conka - Boa Noite:  so frickin badass, I love everything about this.

ParoXysM - Decisions:  Another dynamite track off that 2009 soulseekers comp.   Skitter all over the place.

Romo - Chase:  Harken back to the days of 90s tripped out breakbeat styles.

Thao Nguyen & The Get Down Stay Down - Brand New Key (Melanie cover):  Oh.  Oh this is perfect.  Yes.

MP3 blog 2014/01/14

blog 2014/01/14 - doors open if you know how

and so we go:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140114.zip

Andrea - All Yours:  Full synth wash bass plodder to get us going!

Applescal - Spring And Life:  There's something so technical and precise about this while also staying super warm and inviting.  I love it in all of its contridictions.

Busta Rhymes & Q-Tip - The Abstract & The Dragon:  While the new collab "fans wet dream" reunion mixtape wasn't a glorious revelation of all new craziness, this is a solid reminder that ATCQ still resonates well in to this century.  Admit it, you'd spend an hour just watching these two have a tea party.

Charles Bradley - Strictly Reserved For You:  Another solid bit of soul from the latest, Victim of Love.

Classixx - Stranger Love (RAC Mix):  Classsixx and pop, two dance pop flavours that go together perfectly.

Es Muss Sein - Those Eyes:  Lovely little folk that reminds me a bit of First Aid Kit.

Hundred Waters - Gather
Hundred Waters - Sonnet:  Parts of this album remind me of a stripped out Joanna Newsom, but more 60s folk and 90s triphop.

Land Of Kush - St Stefano
Land Of Kush - The Pit (Part 1):  This is just total glee.  Beautiful jazzy horns and then whooosh we switch in to a roundabout pop mode and nail it.

Los Campesinos! - What Death Leaves Behind:  Never count out the Campesinos, always always bringing it.

Maya Jane Coles - Not In My House:  all over this tech bounce ish.

Michael Jacket - Casino:  If we're going to go minimal, best also confuse my head as well.

Phosphorescent - A Charm, A Blade
Phosphorescent - Song for Zula:  Muchacho is the perfect Bon Iver chaser, and brings one closer to the country cottage feels.

The Invisible - Wings (Floating Points Remix):  Dreamy blips 4evah.

MP3 blog 2014/01/08

blog 2014/01/08 - back for 2014... and beyond!

let's get this started:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20140108.zip

Alpines - Chances (Daichan Remix):  Kick off with some bouncy chill bass.

Bobby Womack - Please Forgive My Heart:  Top notch soul over a wicked skitterskat beat.

CHVRCHES - It's Not Right But It's Okay (Whitney Huston cover):  AWWW YESSS we need some WHITNEY up in the place!

Elbow & The BBC Concert Orchestra - One Day Like This
Elbow & The BBC Concert Orchestra - Weather To Fly:  Oh man, this slipped under my radar for a while, but Elbow got together with the BBC Concert Orchestra and tore the roof off.

ETC!ETC! & Brillz & Diplo - Bueller ft Whisky Pete:  You know you need this ish.

Fabrizio Paterlini - Far away from here (AlesMusiques d'images rmx)
Fabrizio Paterlini - Viandanze (Wilhelms desolateCode rmx):  2 deep slices from the nifty little Fabrizio Paterlini Remixed album.

How To Destroy Angels - Ice Age:  An Omen came out in 2012, and is a great new release from Mariqueen Maandig.  For some reason people weren't in to this album, but I think it's pretty great.  She has some notorious husband who is also in this band, Brent Tenzor or something like that.  He apparently angered people back in usenet days and no one ever forgave him, so the internet rages at him endlessly.  But fuck that, Maandig's got some great chill vibes going on.

How To Dress Well - Here, In Heaven (Elite Gymnastics cover):  This guy just smooths everything out oh so perfectly.  From the Elite Gymnastics' Ruin 3 EP.

ITAL TEK - Black And White:  Dig this one back from 2010's release Midnight Colour, a smooth downtempo slow burner.

Neko Case - I'm From Nowhere
Neko Case - Local Girl:  While I am not convinced she is breaking much ground on it, The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You is still a hella enjoyable album.  Recommended.

Nosaj Thing - Snap:  Nosaj Thing's Home is sooooo dreaamy.

Soul II Soul - Back To Life (Follow Me Remix):  Just drop a little classics all around the place…

Speedy Ortiz - MKVI
Speedy Ortiz - Plough:  More greatness from the fabulous album Major Arcana.

Zion I - Breaking Bad ft Nump & Povi Tamu:  Close up with a killer trapbass floor filler jam.

MP3 blog 2013/12/3

blog 2013/12/03 - the end is NIGH

The end is upon us.  The time ticks down.  This will be the last normal MP3 blog post of the year.
Next week will be my favourite albums of 2013.
The week after?   The annual holiday post.
And then we are on vacation until January.

45 blog posts.
850 mp3s.
Hope you've enjoyed this year, it's been crazy:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131203.zip

Angel Haze - Same Love:  Oh thank god Angel Haze got in and did this.  Fuck yes.

Blind Pilot - 3 Rounds and a Sound (iTunes session):  Wooden stool core.

Crookers & Digi - Stiaah!:  BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

Flint - Mouser:  I don't post a lot of harder stuff, but my god this track from Brof Ken Piano is fabulous.  To take it back some decades, it has a Jesus Lizard intensity with a Mike Patton goofiness.

Gentlemen Hall - Sail Into The Sun (RAC Mix):  RAC is back and keeps the dance groove going on and on and on.

J-Live - Set It Straight (Sammy Senior Remix):  Getting on an epic chill tip here.

Jacksons 5 - ABC (Minimatic's Under The Volcano Mix):  Oh yes, Jacksons need to chill the heck out and the go for the sun.

Majical Cloudz - Impersonator
Majical Cloudz - Turns Turns Turns:  Impersonator feels like a Scott Walker album done as straight-forward cabaret pop.  It has unfolding depths that reward multiple listens.

Maxo Kream - Lewinsky:  Dark ish from Quicc Strikes.

Mice Parade - This River Has A Tide:  I love vocal pairs with such a strong difference in their ranges like this.  A bit like Dirty Projectors lite, but oh so good still.  From Candela.

Nickel -  ZYGZM (Jean Nippon Remix):  Gotta get back on that deep tech tip.

Rihanna - Russian Roulette (Blackbird Blackbird Refix):  Taking all the princesses and lining up the morphine.

Scrns - Ttyn:  School Of Seven Bells is attacking you with their cell phones.

Sky Ferreira - I Blame Myself:  #hnnng pop perfection from Night Time, My Time

Sleigh Bells - Demons (Diplo Remix):  I guess the holiday music is starting early this year?

The Bixby Knolls - Runnin And Runnin:  Let's get drunk and dance to this in a bar and go in circles circles cvicles crickets

The Pink Noise - Bad Trip:  Nonewwave all over this Greedy Heart.

Typhoon - Rules of the Game:  He's going to just wrench it right out of you, Temple Of Doom Style.

Yell for Help - Love Will Keep Us Together:  In case you needed another dose of the Sleigh Bells sound!

MP3 blog 2013/11/26

blog 2013/11/26 - the last chance to prove them wrong

going to keep it all running:  http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog20131126.zip

Arcade Fire - Here Comes The Night Time
Arcade Fire - Normal Person:  It's kind of done.  This will be best album of the year and at least be in everyone's top 5.  Sneer as much as you want, you can't deny it.  Reflektor is golden.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A-Trak - Disco Nap ft Oliver (Q-Bert's RocketCockPet Mix):  Quack it all up on the dance floor, Q-Bert's humour still shines after what, 2 decades?  Love it.

Bambu - Upset The Setup ft Killer Mike:  Great little track from ...one rifle per family.

Bon Iver - Towers (I, Aeronaut Remix):  aaaaand always with the sleepytown Bon Iver remixes!

Brother Ali - Letter To My Countrymen:  I wasn't feeling a lot of Mourning in America and Dreaming in Color, but this somber track really flows well and is quite poignant.

CFCF - Gamelan 1:  Like Four Tet, but much more snuggly.

Clams Casino - Crystals:  Getting witchy on shit shit.

Ellie Goulding - Hanging On (Illo Bootleg):  Illo gets the goods.

Flume - Insane (Fishing Remix):  Great electro bass beat with a perfect flow on top.

Giraffage - Close 2 Me
Giraffage - Feels:  What's with the trend of taking some dope chill bass and slowing the BPM at the end?  Hmmmm?

Gregory Alan Isakov - Amsterdam:  And now we break for some soaring adult-contemporary folk.  Get your scarves out.

Jasper TX - A New Language:  An Index Of Failure gives up the goods mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmrrrrrrrrroooooooooooo

Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - We No Who U R
Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds - Wide Lovely Eyes:  Not time was spent with Push The Sky Away, but these two takeaways stayed along for my ride.

No Joy - Hare Tarot Lies
No Joy - Lunar Phobia:  This is dream pop that gives me shivers and lusts.

Wet - Dreams:  So many feelings, OK?
