MP3 blog 2014/04/18

blog 2014/04/18 - the unfathomable expanse of unbridled playtime

Bibio - À tout à l'heure:  The hazy psych feel here is the perfect Bibio evolution.  Couldn't ask for more.

Bonobo - Cirrus (Dont You Want Me) (Cocolino Edit):  Let's just take that Bonobo smoothness and roll it out in to an eternal groove oh yes.

Eleanor Friedberger - Stare At The Sun (Epitonic Saki Session):  The Fiery Furnaces troubadour returns with a great live take.

Elephant - Skyscraper:  Mininig a touch of surf sentimentality, this is some gloriously satisfying pop.

Fol Chen - A Tourist Town:  Fabulous new track from the new album The False Alarms.

Homeboy Sandman - Brown:  Hot new ish on Stones Throw mines the Tom Waits percussion for some perfectly muted joints.

Icona Pop vs C2C - Happy To Love It (Fissunix mashup):  Ridiculous in concept but oh so precious now that it's here.  WHO KNEW WE NEEDED THIS?

NO - Another Life:  THIS IS NOT THE NATIONAL.   Every review has to state that upfront.  I don't really care, I love the National so much I'd love ot have another dead-ringer replacement in case their tour bus explodes.

Pascal Pinon - Bloom
Pascal Pinon - When I Can't Sleep:  So much force behind this whispered pop magic!  From the new album Twosomeness.

Philip Glass - NYC 73-78 (Beck Remix):  This could have been its own EP, all alone.  But the surprise entry in the Glass Remixes was too quickly overloked.  Here, a giant Beck expanse to just muck around in!

Poludnice vs. Liquid Molly - Dolina, Dolinuszka:  Nowadays it's amazing to hear something dubsteppy without a trap roll or brostep drop.   SO. DAMN. REFRESHING.

State Lines - Win Free:  Sometimes you just need some emo-laden punk pop in your world.

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - Kindness Be Conceived ft Joanna Newsom:  I am loving the new Thao album We The Common and COME ON PEOPLE, JOANNA NEWSOM.  Highly recommended.

The Strokes - 80's Comedown Machine:  I've never been much of a Strokes fan but I really enjoy this song from the new album Comedown Machine

THEBLKHANDS - In Love ft Kembe X:  The XX get ripped over, and while I'm not sure why they weren't credited in the title, the verse on top goes really well.

M3P blog 2013/04/10

blog 2013/04/10 - time to whittle down the audience and just find that spot inside

7bit Hero - Boy Walks Girl To Work And Is Followed By A Ghost.:  8-bit bass in yr face!  The melodies in this are boffo.

BenZel - Fallin' Love (Alex Young Remix):  This is Glass Swords, right?   I can't check that album right now, but yeah this is a Rustie beat, right?  Can't help but love it.

Bradez - Wossop ft Kwaw Kesse (Remix):  Some super dope bounce on this one.

Cliff Dweller - Peace In The Valley (with Therapies Son and Ella Hatamian):  I'm a sucker for anything starting with Amazing Grace.  From the new album Emerald City.

Congo Natty - UK Allstars ft Tenor Fly, Top Cat, General Levy, Tippa Irie, Sweetie Irie, Daddy Freddy (radio edit):  HEY REMEMBER 1996?  Who the fuck would have thought that Congo Natty would make a comeback 17 years later?  And it's DOOOOOPPPEEEEE.

Dinosaur Jr. - Entertainment (Phoenix cover):  Did I mention this week how much I love Dinosaur Jr.?  Because I do.  And will imediately b-line towards any covers they do.

Dr. John - Right Place, Wrong Time (DJ Yamin 2013 Remix):  So so so perfectly funky.  Keep them DJ-friendly reworks coming.

Dream Koala - We Can't Be Friends:  YES, DREAM KOALA, WE CAN BE FRIENDS.  BEST OF FRIENDS FOREVER AND EVER UNTIL INFINITY.

Exist Strategy - Autumn Breeze (Cross Them Out Remix):  Smooth bass goes perfect with strings at the break of dawn.

Fol Chen - I.O.U.:  Everything I've heard leaked from the new album The False Alarms has been kinda sorta perfect on the addictive pop front.  ALL IS WELL.  I AM EXCITE.

Http X Mickie Ryan - Bang Bang:  More female MCs getting badass and dirty on the harsh beats.  Love it.

J. Cole - Nobodys Perfect ft Missy Elliot (ONE4ALL Remix):  J. Cole always had the UK bass worked out, so tossing in some chopped Missy on the track is a perfect seasoning.

Julian Stephen - Booty Call Hrs
Julian Stephen - Hey Stranger:  Taken from the #AwkwardMoments mixtape, I love this guy's flow, and the Radiohead beat certainly doesn't hurt as a broad-stroke populist lovefest move.  For fans pining for a taste of Oldominion stylee, be sure to check this out.

Mark Templeton - Carved And Cared For:  There's something so nurturing and warm about this little ball of chaos that is so enticing.  From the new album Jealous Heart.

Marnie Stern - You Don't Turn Down:  I've always liked Marnie Stern, and always wanted to LOVE here, and I think the new The Chronicles of Marnia album might just have that edge.

Nicolas Jaar - After Laughter Comes Tears (edit):  Jaar digs in to the original to give us a quick edit for all the heads out there.

Niki & The Dove - Tomorrow (Little Daylight Remix):  A little spunkier than the original, you can never catch the emotional impact of the original, so might as well get some dance floor funk in there.

Vampire Weekend - Diane Young:  New Vampire Weekend for 2013!  Stay tuned for more, I'm sure.

Young Galaxy - Pretty Boy (Peaking Lights Remix):  A blissful combination, new Y.G. with some Peaking Lights action on top.  So good.

MP3 blog 2013/04/04

blog 2013/04/04 - this peeks through the shades

2 Chainz - I'm Different (Enferno Remix):  Quiet down Chainz, we're listening to snare rushes!

Freelance Whales & The Beatles - Dear Vagabond (ScottScottScott mashup):  You know me, I rarely post mashups in these here parts, but this one goes oh so well together.

Frequency - Chords of Calmth:  Plod N Bass is my new favourite genre.  OK, not so new.

Geskia! - Answer Song
Geskia! - Two Oranges (Polar M Remix):  I had been revisiting last year's stellar double album 323 Sayonara Memories, and so wanted to redirect you all back to it's glory as well.

Greg Haines - 183 Times:  Glorious stunner from the album Digressions.

Grimes - Skin (Virtual Boy Remix):  Sleek and unassuming little rework that brings the love.

How To Dress Well - & It Was U (Recycle Culture's Uptown Remix):  Who'd have thought if you put a funky beat under him, HTDW pulls of a good James Lidell?

Ink - Goes On:  Energized pop distilled down to exactly what you need.

Jacques Greene - Ready:  Greene gets techy on this shit.

James Blake - Retrograde:  OK, the new Blake does NOT disappoint.  SO GOOD.

Joey Bada$$ - Catharsis
Joey Bada$$ - Waves:  Super slick chilne$$.

K.Flay - Another Round:  A super smooth single, I love this so much.

Lavender Diamond - I Don't Recall:  When you hear her voice, then hear her title is called "Incorruptible Heart", you just kind of think "oh yeah, that makes sense.  Perfect."

River City Extension - Ballad of Oregon

She Makes War - Delete:  Acapella blissout from Little Battles.

The Townhouses - Heartsick
The Townhouses - Our Trees Will Grow:  IDM perfectly metered out, via the album Diaspora.

xSDTRK - powDer:  While the vocals are good, I love the vocal that echoes out "WHHAAAAHHHRRT"

MP3 blog 2013/03/27

blog 2013/03/27 - oh god I'm sick make it end

A Tribe Called Quest - 1nce Again (Bit Funk Remix):  This almost works better as a jazzy house plodder, I swear.

Albert - Lucky ft Anna Lena:  The Gouldin-styled vocals work so well over the slick downtempo production.

BenZel - Fallin Love (Cashmere Cat Remix):  Love susnhinesparkle bass.

Donald Byrd - Wind Parade (King Most's Dub 'Em Down Redirection):  Oh yes please, more Byrd remix works!

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - Fiya Wata:  Epic crooner shit going on right here, from the album Here.

Flume - Holdin On:  Grooving on the sickly syths and wonderful soul vox all over the place.

Isaac Tichauer - Doing What I Got:  Ever the sucker for slick jazzy house grooves.

Justin Timberlake - Pusher Love Girl:  JT IS BACK MOTHERFUCKERS!  After a shockingly decent foray in to film, JT learns from Kanye and Frank Ocean that pop gods can extend the groove and fuck 3 minute pop songs.

Lusine - Without A Plan:  From The Waiting Room, we all know I just love the IDM stalwarts coming back with the Stereolab synthpop wonders.

Pixelord - Solving:  Basspop getting sinister with the pitched-out synths.

Ponchos - Olympics:  Form the Pretty Beats EP, it's like if you took Y2K Boredoms psych enthusiam swells and tossed it down in to an ableton framework.

Port St. Willow - Tourist:  Brooding and developing, this track from Holiday rewards the patient with the pationate trills.

Sid Pattni - Got to Learn Sometimes (Ta-ku Remix)
Ta-ku - Brokeas:  Ladies and Gentlefolk, let me introduce you to hot new producer of the year, TA-KU.  Get on this shit ASAP.

The Joy Formidable - Cholla
The Joy Formidable - Silent Treatment:  New Joy Formidable this year!  I'm super excited to hear all of Wolf's Law.

Top Billin - Sleng Teng Moomba Break:  Classic Sleng Teng riddim gets a 2012 makeover by the rework masters Top Billin, perfect for pretty much any party-killing DJ set.

Tumbling Bones - Trouble Around My Soul:  This is for all the haters that said I didn't put enough gospel acapella on my blog!

Tyler, The Creator - Domo23:  From the 2013 album WOLF.

MP3 blog 2013/03/20

blog 2013/03/20 - nothing not this time

Aaliyah - Are You That Somebody (Paces Bootleg):  Paces works some magic again and the Aaliyah rides again.

Atoms for Peace - Default:  This track is pretty much everything I wanted Radiohead to get along to after Kid A.

Banabila & Machinefabriek - Slow Wave I:  Machinefabriek is an elemental force to be dealt with like the reliable winter storms or spring blossoms.  They have a fabulously deep catalogue, and this Banabila & Machinefabriek collaboration is an extremely accessible entry point in to it with succulent textures and drones and whirrs.  Highly recommended.

CHVRCHES - Recover:  These are basically the high water mark of pop music for 2013.  Everyone else, get in line.

Curtis Mayfield - Superfly (DJ Aditup edit):  I love the trend of releasing useful edits of the classics, and here is another good example, with some added samples and scratches on top.  You might recognize the bassline from Paul's Boutique, but always good to get back to the originals.

Daughter - Love (Zebra Safari Edit):  This song is fabulous and I even had to choose amongst a handful of wonderful remixes to include here.  Always a good sign.

Foreign Beggars - Kreps (MRK 1 Remix):  I mostly ignore grime, but holy hell this song has everything, and does it all oh so well.

Frank Ocean - Thinking About You (WMNSTUDIES Remix):  A simple little rework on one of the best single of 2012.

Pantha Du Prince & The Bell Laboratory - Spectral Split:  Elements Of Light is one of the best albums of 2013 so far, and here's an epic example of why you all need to pay attention.

Parenthetical Girls - Brimstone & Vaseline
Parenthetical Girls - Curtains:  The album Privilege has been coming out in bits and pieces over 1+ year now.  Part 5 is here and is another amazing contribution.  I've gone from liking the Parenthetical Girls to having them become essential.

Parliament - Chocolate City (Chuck Wild's Bronco Drama Mix):  One of my favourite Parliament tracks gets a funky little edit.  Totally essential.

Sasha Go Hard - Blow My Mind
Sasha Go Hard - Kill Bill ft Kreayshawn:  So much hardcore dirty female vocalists blowing up right now, it's pretty damn awesome.

Yumi & The Weather - Not Again (Ambassadeurs Remix):  Again, the Ambassadeurs give us some amazingness!

MP3 blog 2013/03/14

blog 2013/03/14 - and you wait and you watch

Druid Cloak - Sun Elf:  This is banging happybass that does everything right.  Love it.

Elbow - Lay Down Your Cross
Elbow - Love Blown Down:  You know a band is amazing when their stop-gap B-Side collection is better than so many other albums in the same year.  Dead in the Boot is essential for any Elbow fan, brimming with classics.

Frightened Rabbit - December's Traditions
Frightened Rabbit - Holy:  Haven't heard it all yet, but 2013 brings us the new FR: Pedestrian Verse.

Giraffage - All That Matters:  Satisfying pitched-down soulbass that works wonders, and leads well for the Ware stuff below.

Jessie Ware - Something Inside
Jessie Ware - Wildest Moments:  Devotion for me is more miss than hit, but OMG the hits are intense and worth the price of admission.

Kendrick Lamar - The Recipe (Trapback Remix):  Open the drawer, scoop out the Lamar, replace with trap good.  Repeat.

Left Boy - Sweet Dreams:  This shit is nutso all over the place.

Matmos - Teen Paranormal Romance:  Oh so delicious clickgasm from these masters of samplesourcing.  New album The Marriage of True Minds, watch for it!

My Bloody Valentine - New You
My Bloody Valentine - Who Sees You:  Now kids, gather around grandma and let me tell you a story about an ancient warrior named kevin shields…

Open Mike Eagle - Self Medication Chant:  Great little plod forward.

MP3 blog 2013/03/05

blog 2013/03/05 - I will follow follow follow and look up hopeful

Accoy - In The Tube (Trial)
Accoy - Sync To Me:  In the advent of the dubbed out rnb craze, I love how these track take things further to the dub scrub and I get lost in the blissed out echo.

Air Review - Low Wishes:  Oh hey, it's a new song by Ottawa powerhouse band The ACORN!  Wait, no?  Oh.  Well, they are certainly shaken from the same tree and would do a jolly good job covering an Acorn classic.  In the

Charli XCX - You (Ha Ha Ha):  Charli gets on the Gold Panda beat and oh goodness gives us the goods oh so good.

CocoRosie - Gravediggress:  From the new album Tales of a Grass Widow, let us all hope these gals can once again seduce me.

Colin Stetson - High Above A Grey Green Sea:  The warfare continues and its now gone mindgames.  Looking forward to the new album, New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light.

Hauschka - Radar (Michael Mayer Remix):  The glistening highlight from the Salon Des Amateurs Remix EP.

John Zorn - Kavanah
John Zorn - Persepolis:  Remember when I was gushing over the Gnostic Preludes?  Well stepp aside Gnosty, because The Concealed is now knocking my socks off.  Pants are next.

Junip - Line of Fire:  New album in 2013 from Jose Gonzalez!  Love the epic swelling.

Ke$ha - Die Young (Drag Disco Mix by Ad-ver-sary):  WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE SO MIGHT AS WELL DIE YOUNG

Kid The Wiz & Tweek Tune - Real Harlem Shake:  Kids need to recognize and get down with this real shit.

Kitty - Ay Shawty 3.0 ft Lakutis
Kitty - Dead Island
Kitty - Scout Finch Bitch ft Antwon:  OoooooK I feel the need to explain myself here.  3 Kitty tracks.  No wait, =kitty= tracks.  Need the whiskers.  Tumblr rap's first breakout star has a slacker seductiveness that echoes the naïve appeal of early Beck.  OK, she's no Beck, but if she releases an album of cutup and screwed 1960s girlpop over intoxicated poetry recordings, don't say I didn't warn you.

Mountains - Living Lens:  Shimmering purgatory from the new album Centralia.

Rodriguez - Hate Street Dialogue (Round Table Knights Searching For Sugar Man Edit):  Freshly rediscovered thanks to the award winning new documentary Finding Sugar Man.

Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - City
Thao & The Get Down Stay Down - Holy Roller:  YESSSSSS NEW THAO!  New album is We the Common, get it now!

MP3 blog 2013/02/28

blog 2013/02/28 - the night brings desperation for the hours of the day

Angel Haze - Doo Wop (That Thing) (Lauryn Hill cover):  Hot cover of the classic gets a 21st century update.

Anna Meredith - Never Wonder
Anna Meredith - Rhododendron:  Black Prince Fury EP is full of mystical aural wonders that tweak a big happy spot in my brain.  Sometimes straight ahead, often baffling, and always satisfying, I can't recommend this enough for fans of contemporary electronic music, James Ferraro, or Max Tundra.

Baauer - Yaow!:  A surprisingly solid followup to the single of the winter.  Thank god he didn't turn farce by putting a stupid filter drop.

Brooke Sharkey - His Voice:  From the album One Dress, there are whispers of Joanna Newsom here with a root of twang and soul and I love it all dearly.

Brother Ali - Nardwuar:  Now this better make you smile.  What an awesome thing:  taking an interview, and records acquired during it, and making a track all about your INTERVIEW.  So cool.

Christa Vi - Small Way Through (Cosmonaut Grechko Version):  The hint of bossanova groove reminds me of a more soulful Stereolab.

Flume - Sleepless (Charles Murdoch Remix):  Smooth chopped vox deep bass

Free Magic & Jkriv - Night Braces (Sammy Bananas Sax Dub):  Saxophone and deephouse go together like cosmos and infinity.

Just Blaze & Baauer - Higher:  Another slab of Baauer angriness.  Enjoy it before you have to hate it next month.

Kait Lawson - Place In The Ground:  Oh yes, woo me with your clarinet and tuba oh god yes!

Rudimental - Hell Could Freeze ft Angle Haze:  Angel Haze has been on some hot joints in the past while, but this one takes the whole pie.  So great.

The Golden Filter - Lullaby from Rosemary's Baby:  OH NO, NOT CREEPY AT ALL NOPE.

The Knife - Full of Fire:  HELL YESSSSS NEW KNIFE.

The Knot - Penumbra I:  Some fabulous grinding drone from their split with Arachnidiscs.

Young Wonder - To You (Ambassadeurs Remix):  blisteringly effective beats of romance for the hazing morning after.

Bat For Lashes - Rest Your Head (MANIK Ghost Pines Rework):  The fabo new Bat For Lashes lacks the punch of the electro reality, so I am happy to find any reworks laying a beaty framework on it all.  OK this one isn't my favourite, but there is a paucity of them out there, so I'm taking the parts where I can get them.

Communist Daughter - No Children (The Mountain Goats cover):  Oh yes, let's take one of the most intense and dramatic Mountain Goats songs are redo it as earnest folk apocalypse, yes!

Cris X - Funeral Parade Of Roses:  Some brooding textures from the new album Guya / Greed.

Finley Quaye - Even After All (DJ Beset Edit):  You don't always need a comlex rework, sometimes just a little polish and rework makes an old gem shine.

First Aid Kit - Winter Is All Over You (Baauer Remix):  But then sometimes you want a total rework.  You want to take precious and delicate folk music and wrap it in some Baauer trap shit.  He's this generation's Switch/Sinden.

Frightened Rabbit - Old Old Fashioned (live):  From the album Liver! Lung! FR!, this is kind of the perfect way to hear this, hands down, bottoms up.

Gold Panda - Trust:  Gold Panda tones it down for this new single producing a restrained and seductive plodder that swirls it oh so perfectly.

Joshua Hyslop & Anna Scouten - What Have I Done:  This is some Damien Rice styled beauty right here.

Julie Doiron - Our Love:  Doiron is back with a new album So Many Days

Lisa Bozikovic - Midnight Ice:  For fans of Julie Doiron, be sure to take note of Canada's next folk superstar offering.  Here we have a new track from Lisa Bozikovic's new album This is How We Swim.

M83 - Steve McQueen (MAPS Remix):  Modern M83 is so overbearing that you wonder how you can have an appropriate remix of it, so I always appreciate it when a producer can reign in the excess without sacrificing the goodness.

Matana Roberts & Stefan Christoff - Duet for Abdelrazik:  Such a stunning duet.  Love it.  The story behind this is something out of the most horrifying Kafka policestate nightmares, but read about the project, hear more of it, and order it here http://howlarts.net/releases/

Mount Eerie - I Walked Home Beholding
Mount Eerie - Instrumental 1:  I think I was caught off guard at how much I really enjoyed the brooding postrocky vibes of Ocean Roar.  Highly recommended.

Pair Of Arrows - Vestige:  Sweet and perfect electropop.

The Pro Letarians - Dream Catcher:  Shiny block top clean summertime rap.

Tokyo Police Club - All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem cover):  All rock bands should at least attempt a cover of this song.  It is the Kids of America for the 2st century.

MP3 blog 2013/02/07

blog 2013/02/07 - there's no upset if there is no try

Aaron Lipsett - Know This:  Total badass bass smooth miraclegro shit.

Birdy - Skinny Love (Bon Iver cover):  Yes, I know what you're thinking.  This is better than the original.  It's OK, no shame.  I totally agree.

Dark Time Sunshine - Valiant ft Child Actor:  He reminds me of The Listener (remember them from Mush days?) but it's really Onry Ozzborn kicking some lush thoughtful laidback jams.

David Krakauer - Monadel (John Zorn):  We've already established that John Zorn is a nonhuman, most likely a ultraverse spanning demonspawn of such mindbending powers that to look in his eyes is to dissolve one's soul.  And we know he's brilliant, and I will listen to pretty much any album he's involved in.  Masada Book Two is now up to VOLUME 18.  Book of Angels keeps the hot flavour going, this time with David Krakauer in the driver's seat.  Highly recommended for fans of Masada works and klezmer jazz.

Elliott Brood - Graveyard (Feist Cover):  While not quite meeting the highest highs of the original, it is fun to hear a new take on this soon-to-be Canadiana classic.

Eraas - Briar Path (Remix V3):  Minimal brooding beats can do just well simmering in their own reverb.

Ghost Beach - Miracle (Viceroy Remix):  I'm reminded of that Matt & Kim "HEY LETS SHOUT ABOUT HOW HAPPY WE ARE" and then I'm reminded how good keytars and bongos sound in electro pop.

Giraffage & XXYYXX  - Even Though (Blackbird Blackbird Remix):  Now this is a threeway I can get behind.  But that'd make it a foursome.

J Kwon - Tipsy (Candyland's OG Remix):  Sometimes you just need a banger.  Here you go.

Metz - Wet Blanket:  Metz are pure mindblowing fierceness.  Get in to it.

Nosaj Thing - Distance
Nosaj Thing - EclipseBlue ft Kazu Makino:  The new album Home is just lovely, and a dive back in to the IDM pool that once spawned him.

Pantha Du Prince & The Bell Laboratory - Photon:  HOT ALBUM ALERT.  Elements Of Sound is the first album of 2013 that I heard that will assuredly dominate best of the year lists.  It is a minimal masterpiece.  Highly recommended.

Tame Impala - Feels Like We Only Go Backwards:  With all of the love for Tame Impala I felt a bit awkward that I just wasn't super in to them, so I decided to say that I really do love this track.

The Deer Tracks - Okta Crash:  The interplay of the banigng drums with the pixie voice is a perfect match in my books.

The O'My's - The Wonder Years ft Chance the Rapper & Nico Segal:  Love the chill life-dwelling 70s80s vibe of this track.

Wolf Alice - Leaving You (Sound Remedy Remix):  leaving you with some glorious sparkly electro pop!

MP3 bog 2013/01/30

blog 2013/01/30 - we are hopeful, we are patient, we are scared

Above & Beyond - Small Moments Like These:  21st century Vangelis revolution.  Get running.

Alkalino - Memoria:  Is this a guilty pleasure?  A sublime tribute?  Or just the greatest dose of Nirvana you'll ever hear?

Altered Tensions - Force Of Gravity (Too Much Time In Front Of A Computer Remix):  Blustery and sexy and enthralling IDM pleasures, from The Answer To The Question You Forgot To Ask

Anamanaguchi - Meow:  MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW!

Bar-Kays - Too Hot To Stop (D.veloped Remix):  We've moved in to a new realm of mashing here, where it just becomes sample drenched goodness.

Bomb The Music Industry! - Jobs Schmobs:

Caspar - Put A Lid On It:  Squirrel Nut Zippers never sounded so good.

Dan Deacon - Lots:  I’m not the world's biggest Dan Deacon fan, but this track off new album America has JUST ENOUGH zip and/or pep.

Eric Harvey - Tried & True:  At first it's a normal cancon-ish folk song, but oh the female harmonies come in and then it is a classic.

Memotone - Low Light
Memotone - Rooftop:  The new Memotone album "I Sleep. At Waking" strides the not-so-great divide between IDM and lush modern ambient sound art pieces.  Admit it, you have them all in the same folder at this point, don't you?  DON'T YOU?  Well make some room because this one is a keeper as well.

Mykki Blanco - HazeBoogie:  Blanco Blanco Blanco all over this shit.

She & The Sun - Bad Lover:  Mellowed out pop folk from the self-titled album.

The 1975 - Sex (Liar Remix):  Another remix of this great track, but now all sludged out.

The Allergies - Pick-Up Lines:  This takes mashups to a new level of ingenuity.  It is a great example of constructed narrative that can be achieved.  See also:  THE NEXT SONG.

The Monkees - Mary Mary (Jim Sharp DMC Edit):  Such a smart mix, letting The Monkees pop siren song blast on through the DMC breakbeats.

Urbantramper - Kate Bush Saved My Life (GodWolf Remix):  Kate Bush saved us all, you just might not have realized it yet.

XXYYXX - Amaze Me:  Yes, you are definitely amazing, you glorious chromosonal chimera you.

Yahtzel - Beached:  Big chunky downtown spelunking bass right here.

Yo La Tengo - Cornelia And Jane:  Bliss rock from the new album Fade.

MP3 blog 2013/01/22

blog 2013/01/22 - no blood runs through it at all

Acid House Kings - This Heart Is A Stone:  This is the kind of glory we can rise to in a post Belle & Sebastien era.  I only wish I loved the rest of their catalogue as much as this song.

Angel Haze - Gimme That
Angel Haze - Werkin' Girls (Son Of Kick Rmx):  Haze rocks some booty jiggle trap shit like none other.

Brambles - In The Androgynous Dark
Brambles - Such Owls As You:  The album is called Charcoal, and these perfect little sound works sketch things out wonderfully.

Chairlift - I Belong In Your Arms:  Ridiculous 80s-inspired pop from the new album Something.

Daughter - Youth:  Rambunctious and emotional and a flurry of the insides outward.  From The Wild Youth EP.

Death Ledger - Untrue:  Grinding breakeat that is Death Grips meets chillbass.

Debo Band - Asha Gedawo:  I have no idea what is going on here but oh I love it.

Disko-ions - Marram Rest:  Pretty darn minimal, but something about the snappy sounds in it sounds like it could be the next epic training montage go-to track.

DJ Grotesque - Nowhere To Hide From Willie (2012 Version):  Oh fuck yes, RAWWRRR here come the gravediggaz!

GravelRoad & T-Model Ford - Little Red Rooster:  Before you ask, yes, this is contemporary.  From the 2011 album Taledragger.

Hurray For The Riff Raff - My Sweet Lord (George Harrison cover):  Ahhh Harrison…

Killer Mike - Reagan:  Another great track from the new album  R.A.P. Music.

Kontent - Elevate:  Breathey electro pants.

Los Rakas - Bien Ribetiao:  Sweeet bass from the El Flow Californiano mixtape.

Raekwon - Who Shot Ya Freestyle:  Hard to deny Rae's still got it going hot, after all these years.  From the new one, Who Shot Ya.

Serengeti - Shazam:  This is some cartoon flow shit that just works through its own internal logic just right.

Skeewiff & The Soul Stirrers - I Want To Rest:  Sweet zombie jesus, oh my!

Vienna Ditto - I Know His Blood Will Make Me Whole:  And now let's up the creepy factor to 11!

MP3 blog 2013/01/18

blog 2013/01/18 - what's the conky?

Ab-Soul - Nibiru:  FUCK I'M DOING TALKING ABOUT PINEAL GLANDS?

Alt-J - Tessalate:  Withering folk for the new era.

Andy Stott - Hatch the Plan
Andy Stott - Up The Box:  Stott releases some subtle magic on his new album Luxury Problem.  The unceasing darkness of his 2011 material gives way to a vibe that is still dark, but much more enticing.

Bombdroppers - Night Beat (Skeewiff Remix):  Jazz breaks abound in this phrenetic ball o funk.

Captain Murphy - The Killing Joke:  Spoiler alert:  It's just more Flying Lotus, but oh hey, it's MORE FLYING LOTUS.

CHVRCHES - The Mother We Share:  2013 is off to a kickin' start with some incredible electro pop that makes me soar.

Disclosure - Tenderly:  Can it still be considered deep when so frenetic?

Giyo - Summer Breeze (Set Sail):  Total downtempo smoothness.

Glass Kites - Soothsayer:  There's such a gloriousness to the retro sound of this.  I don't know why, but it's like a blockbuster from the 90s.

Hardplay - Requiem For A Dream (Trap Fix):  Yes, you know you needed this ball of evil.

Heems - Cowabunga Gnarly:  Yeah so Das Racist is dead, love live Heems holy shit.

Jessie Ware - Still Love Me:  Oh so sexy and perfect.  It's the just-enough beat.

Johnny Boy - You Are The Generation That Bought More Shoes and You'll Get What You Deserve:  I think this is the most timely and perfect song ever.

Photay - I Don't Live Near The Ocean ft Kwajbasket:  Flittering whisps of compressed beats and pulsing guitars make a happy Caitlyn.

Romi Graham - SexyBack:  I'm oh so happy that I found this.  And that the they do the entire.  Song.

S3 (Miles Bonny & Brenk Sinatra) - Don't Stop:  Just enough soul to roll.

The Antlers - Drift Dive:  Choice Antlers from the new Undersea EP.

Titus Andronicus
- Breed (Nirvana cover):  After not caring much for their 2012 album, I was happy to take my dose of gravel like this.

MP3 blog 2013/01/11

blog 2013/01/11 - somehwat nameless, somewhat endless

And we are back to our regularly scheduled awesomeness!
Big thanks to M.S. who sent me an amazing Sol Lewitt book:  http://www.amazon.com/Sol-LeWitt-Views-Susan-Cross/dp/0300152825

Dark Horses - Road To Nowhere:  Sweet vocal layers of mellowtown pop blissout from the new album Black Music.

Death Grips - KLINK (42ghosts Remix):  The #1 priority on a DG remix is to give it some freaking SPACE.  Allow that shit to breathe and let us DJs get all up init.

Dinosaur Jr. - Don't Pretend You Didn't Know:
Dinosaur Jr. - See It On Your Side

Do Make Say Think - Greed Waltz:  The glorious sway of the surf guitar and horns is pure coastal bliss.

Ellie Goulding - Only You (Dopeshoes Dancehall Remix):  Goulding remixes OH SO WELL and this is another perfect example.

Iyes - Lighthouse:  A taste of the XX sounds here, but ain't nothing wrong with that.

Jenn Grant - I Want You Back:  From The Beautiful Wild, Jenn Grant is the pinnacle of that CBC sound.

Jessika Kenney & Eyvind Kang - Tavaf:  I immediate go for anything with Kang on it, and the new album The Face of the Earth is an incredible notch in his discography.  Highly recommended.

Kendrick Lamar - Swimming Pools (Drank) (Bird Peterson Remix):  The top single from Lamar's debut, given an extra oomph BP.

Mann - Bend Ya ft Kendrick Lamar & Frank Ocean:  How do you end up with the #1 and #2 artists of 2012 on your track???

Mykki Blanco - Wavvy:  Blanco Blanco Blanco = hotnesssss

The 1975 - Sex (Ryan Hemsworth Remix):  Hemsworth sasses up the most overwrought pop lamentations and makes it more epic than 80s U2.

Tinashe - The Last Night On Earth (Giraffage Remix):  Remember what I was on all about with Hemsworth?  Yeah well Giraffage brings the goods too, but now with even more popbounce sweetness.

Tori Amos - Jackie's Strength (Gold Dust version)
Tori Amos - Precious Things (Gold Dust version)
Tori Amos - Silent All These Years (Gold Dust version):  TORI AMOS!  Remember her?  Remember those days in grade 10 spent weeping deeply in the corner of your school with Little Earthquakes on repeat??? DO YOU REMEMBER???  Like most people, I drifted away from Tori when she released a music video with a face CGI implanted on to a foot.  She's done stuff since then apparently, including a pretty decent album for Deutsche Grammaphone.  Following in the footsteps of Antony Hegarty, she releases an album of classics with an orchestral backing.  I'm not too critical about the newer material I don't know, but oh oh oh oh the classics, they swell!  The production is impeccable.

a few notes...

1) as of New Year's Eve, I will be removing all 2010 blog entries from the server.  Go to http://www.thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/ and download now while you can.
2) someone informed me that I had accidentally removed my address from my wishlist.  I fixed that.  But also realized I should probably link to my wishlist at amazon.ca, since I am in Canada and no point shipping me stuff from the USA.
3) in case you missed it, be sure to check out my year-end holiday mega post and best-ofs.
4) have a great 2013, people!

[BEST OF 2012] Best albums of 2012!

blog 2012/12/18 - [BEST OF 2012] CPI's favourite albums

This year I wrote a lot about the crushing realization that there is just far too much music to ever really listen to.
I also lost my capacity to concentrate and keep swimming upstream.  We had a baby, and I find myself here in December having only dipped my toes in to the stream of releases.
But I still listen to far more music than the average human, so I will keep at this for a bit.  The mp3 blog will be maintained for as long as I still listen to music while at work, it seems.

As a DJ, I was thinking this would be a GREAT TIME to retire.  I released my magnum opus series (Chosen Families), and went out on a 2-part dance party that summarized my live party sets from the past year or two.
But I am really not brave enough to just cut myself off.  I lack that discipline and that conviction.
And in my head I have been formulating a long, multi-part series of drone ambient mixes, so that might still have to happen.  And I want to do more with noise...  SO yeah.
My cachet as a live DJ has never been more than a blip, and I imagine the attention I garner online will slowly dissipate as I peter out of existence over the years.
CPI:  not with a bang, but with a whimper.

And again, big thanks to anyone who has hired me in the past, especially for chill gigs, and everyone who bought me a book from my wishlist.  Your attached notes of gratitude were also appreciated.

I'm still around.  I'll still be in your life if you let me and keep coming back around these parts, but entropy always wins.

CPI'S top 20 albums of 2012

01) Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan
Someone else said it best:  The Dirty Projectors are unable to resist any moment that allows them to display how ridiculously talented they are.  This is 4th dimensional chess pop music,

02) Japandroids - Celebration Rock
The giants of Canada, and rightly so.  The emotional catharsis of the first album, wasn't a fluke.  They manage to expand upon it perfectly, and from the start of the fireworks to the end of the fireworks, some how a year has gone by in your heart.

03) The Mountain Goats - Transcendental Youth
Like my favourite MG records, this one was a slow roll, tumbling in to my brain and just building up steam as the narratives soaked in.  The horns sections remind me of the highlights from They Might Be Giants' John Henry, the melancholy rich, but not to be outdone by the characters and concern.

04) Purity Ring - Shrines
Canada's best debut for 2012, by far.

05) Aesop Rock - Skelethon
Aesop is back on his stride and has released an album that is simultaneously mature and his funniest/goofiest album ever.  He even drops a beat-free streaming narrative of a heroic dog saving a drowning child.  He even writes songs about goofy haircuts, and brings in some Kimya Dawson.  And it all gels with the density and precision that will have you coming back for more, picking apart his flow line by line.

06) Best Coast - The Only Place
There is a schoolgirl joy that I only before found in the likes of that dog. that is so well represented here.  Not only is it summer shining fine, but also great diary-writing reminiscing music.

07) Sharon Van Etten - Tramp
A world of emotion and struggle are laid bare in my perfect rainy-day driving soundtrack of the year.  Oh and wait, what's that?  The guy from Beirut is here to party? Oh hell yes.

08) Passion Pit - Gossamer
Passion Pit are back and do exactly what you want them to do, except are even tighter.  That is all.

09) Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It
The tender emotional weight of this album just envelopes you.  It has the eery spaciousness of the Weeknd, the dark edges of Xiu Xiu, and an unapologetic effectiveness that will help you get to the bottom of those lonely nights.

10) Kid Koala - 12 bit Blues
This is the album that Kid Koala was born to make:  A studio-based turntable composition that mines classic blues and reconstructs them as a contemporary opus that pays so much loving homage and has a blast doing.

11) Swans - The Seer
OH DEAR LORD IT IS GOING TO EAT ME OH GOD NO!   The scariest album cover of all time.  And an epic dark blues goth romp that fuses progressive noise metal structures with Pink Floyd bombast.  Listening to the 33-minute title track alone and naked should be requisite for entering in to the year 2013.

12) Fiona Apple - Idler Wheel
At the dawn of 2012, no one ever expected to be one of the hottest acts of the year, but here we are.  A critical darling of the indie press, and a critical darling of the mainstream rock mags.  WHO'D HAVE THOUGHT?

13) Cloud Nothings - Attack on Memory
The oscillation between goofy fun and intense aggression is what makes Cloud Nothing so enthralling, and they have even improved on what they laid down on their past album.

14) The Tallest Man on Earth - There's No Leaving Now
There is nothing staggeringly new about this album.  I don't listen to it and think MY GOD, HE'S CHANGED!  No, it is the steady work ethic that provides a reliable brilliance that endears this album to me.  It is all the goodness of this Swedish folkster that is highlighted, underlined, and reworked in to new forms.

15) Ryan Hemsworth - Last Words
Electronic albums like this are my favourite:  5 hot tracks, 5 hot reworks.  It's the perfect format.  An EP of genius, tucked in with an EP of genius reworks.

16) Niki And The Dove - Instinct
Remember that Kate Bush meets The Knife erotic fanfiction you always dreamed of writing?  Well lucky for you, here it is!  With a generous dash of Young Galaxy contemporary pop, this album hits all sorts of nodules in your brain that you probably haven't jumped at in years.

17) Death Grips - The Money Store
The energy of a first listen to Death Grips is what it was like to listen to Atari Teenage Riot back in their debut.  A cacophonous intensity you probably weren't used to before.  The kinetic percussion is all over the place, and I do recommend grabbing the insutrmental version as well.

18) Cold Specks - I Predict A Graceful Expulsion
Canadian folk can breed a deep resonance from the unlikeliest of places.  There is a tremble and roar in this album, and it just leaves you excited to hear what she will do next.

19) Hot Chip - In Our Heads
I kind of imagine Hot Chip as just the singer, going around performing with a microphone and a laptop.  He'd be the perfect travelling crooner.  Like with the beats, you can almost here the timecode in Ableton ticking ever forward.  Hot Chip have that reliable simplicity about them.  But they are also reliably one the best pop albums of the year.  Every time I expect a hint of complacency or compromise, they continue doing their thing, continue producing absolutely fun and satisfying pop albums.

20) How To Dress Well - Total Loss
With all of the hot future RNB out there, this one is the pinnacle for me.  It captures the emotion, the space, the lust, all without being all douchey.  Good job.

One thing to note, to clear up some confusion:  I personally rate albums in regards to how good they are as a full album.  As something I want to put on and listen to from start to finish.
Where is Frank Ocean???  I know, I know.  I love Ocean too, but after listening to channel orange 10 times, there was only 4 tracks I actually cared to ever hear again.
So here are a handful of runner-ups.  Albums that have greatness on them, I have just been skipping around in them a bit too much.  Extra credit for the keeners.
