warning!

Warning!  Warning!  Warning!

Once the clock flips over to 2012, we will be deleting all of the blog files from 2009!
If you wanted to grab any of them (check http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/blog_history.txt for the breakdown and http://thetastates.com/mp3s/blog/ for the links) do it ASAP.
As per usual, the "best of 20xx" posts and the holiday posts will stay online, but all other shall vanish.

MP3 blog 2011/12/16 - happy whateverthefuckyoucelebrate! Last post of the year!

blog 2011/12/16 - ye' ol' holida' pos'

The annual tradition continues!  Another 2 CDs of oddball holiday renditions, newfound classics, indie rock interpretations and a bunch of silly goofball messes, in 2 parts.
And another part of the tradition:  All years of this are available!  8 CDs of holiday terror/cheer in total.
My recommendations:  start with the older ones, work yr way forward.
Put all on random, calm your gag reflex.

Get yourself a motion sickness bag, we're going in for a barrelroll!

[BEST OF 2011] experimental/instrumental albums

blog 2011/12/08 - [BEST OF 2011] Best of instrumental and experimental albums

Let's get things started!  Wooot!

Experimental, contemporary instrumental, noise, classical, it's all here!  Why?  Well I generally listen to this stuff in a way separate from most pop music (i.e. contemporary song structure, usually with vocals).  Instead of focusing on genres, I am all about categorizing music on the CONTEXTS IN WHICH I UTILIZE IT.

For example:
Dance music and hiphop:  For the most part, I utilize these genres as a DJ and am purging mercilessly, which is why a lot of it does not make my best-of-2011, which focuses on COHESIVE ALBUMS.  Often my favourites will just get played at my gigs.
Pop music:  general listening, particularly in the car.
Experimental/instrumental:  I usually listehn to this stuff alone (because my wife's not too in to it,) and often with more specific focus.

I have assembled the playlist file in the post to descend from my favouritest, down.

CAITLYN'S FAVOURITE INSTRUMENTAL / EXPERIMENTAL ALBUMS OF 2011!!!!!!!!

[BEST OF 2011] 2011 in review

2011 in review
Wow, another year!  They are positively cascading away from me.  All downhill from here…  Are you reading this?
I'm doing things slightly different now.  A few changes this year:  I am only going to bother with the top 40 albums.  Not 50.
I am not going to bother with listing my favourite mixtapes (because obviously they are the ones I made), nor best EPs nor reissues.  I will still post a selection of my favourite experimental records.
I will write less about the albums.  I will write more about myself.  I will offer a schedule.
Dec 07: this.
Dec 08: best of instrumental & experimental
Dec 12: BO2011:  40-21
Dec 13: BO2011:  20-1
Dec 15: annual holiday music post

So what did I accomplish this year?
I spent most of my time on the Chosen Families series and am incredibly proud of them.  Download them ASAP if you have not already…
The development of my "dreamer beats" aesthetic has resulted in mixes that are very rewarding for me.  They are their own little worlds that span genres and conventions, but give me the emotional hooks I am looking for.  All the while being as smooth as possible.
CPI - Directions To My Special Place (chosen families 1)
CPI - Glittering, Waiting (chosen families 2)
CPI - Always More Than This (chosen families 3)
CPI - Oh, Glorious Perversions (chosen families 4)
Combine that with last year's Moonchild (in memoriam) and you have over 7 hours of musical mixes that you probably can't find anywhere else.  If there's anyone else doing this, I'd love to know because I would want people making stuff like this for me.

I released a new single by Lesbians On Ecstasy featuring bounce sensation Big Freedia, including my own DJ edit of it.   Check the video and get the MP3s.

I have an art book collection which you can browse over at Librarything,  I just set up my profile there this year.  I like to get my books as cheap as possible though, so to assist I created a new tool.
Amazon Used Deals Finder scans anyone's wishlist and finds the best deals on it, and as well tracks historical trends in an item's used price.
It's pretty damn cool, even if like my mixes, I have no idea how to promote it and get it in to the hands of those who need it.
But that is how I work:  focus on a project, make it as best I can, dump it online to be obscured by the sheer volume of the internet and then move on to the next.

I set up a lot of different sites.  Like http://caitlynpascal.com for starters.  I also got on twitter at and tumblr.

In Ottawa, in collaboration with Ad-ver-sary, I started a new noise & experimental performance series called Pitch Black.  Check us out at http://PitchBlackNoise.ca if you are in to weird sounds and/or want to perform for us.
My jadedness about queer clubs/DJs in Ottawa boiled over and I decided fuck it, I'm starting my own.  It will be called Q-Bounce and shall debut in January.   QUEER BASS UNDERGROUND.  Http://q-bounce.ca to get on board for that.  CPI favourite Rae Spoon will be performing at the opening night.
I also still run an LGBT-focused underground documentary series called Divergence Movie Night, http://DivergenceMovieNight.com and we just finished our SIXTH YEAR.
Q-Bounce will be a joint fundraiser for Divergence Movie Night and the amazing people at the Venus Envy Bursary Fund.  Pitch Black and Q-Bounce will be quarterly.  For the next year or two I will probably move DMN to being bimonthly, just so I can fit it all in sanely.

I had the magical opportunity to score a new sound-piece for contemporary dancer Lana Morton.  It debuted in May.

Posted 63 mp3 blogs.
Uploaded a bunch of youtube videos.
We had 11 Divergence Movie Night screenings.
Curated 2 art shows.

THE FUTURE

There is just SO MUCH MUSIC nowadays, it's pretty foolish to think you can ever be on top of it.
This year I spent most of my time listening to new music, let's say a few hundred albums from 2011, and still there are tonnes of BEST OF lists out there with albums I have never heard.
I found a crapload of amazing music. And that also means there is also a crapload of amazing music out there that I didn't hear.
It is exciting! And terrifying!
Every once in a while I feel I have to abdicate some internal desire to check out everything that people hold high and exclaim about. Every once in a while I have to remember to go back and listen to records that didn't just come out this year.
My joy received from hearing great music must be tempered by the realization that there is far more amazing music out there than I will ever properly consume. That the vastness of talent out there is well beyond my grasp.  That I barely even listen to classical genres, that I barely watch any contemporary dance!  The world spins fantastically.
Back in the pre-Internet days, the music world consisted of what the 2 or 3 awesome records shops had stocked and what ended up on traded mixtapes you dubbed. It seemed much more containable.  You felt like you could hold it in your hands if you tried hard enough.
I want to feel more content with the reality that I am just scraping the surface, to just be happy with that, and enjoy that small amount with as much prescience (and fidelity!) as I can reasonably accommodate.

I do not know how much longer I will continue doing this blog.  I am not really sure if a significant number of my friends use it at all.  Every day 10 new music blogs spring up by people who know how to wite and have more time on their hands.
Even if sometimes I feel like a mid-size fish, the world is a gigantic pond, and so it can feel discouraging to continue.  Do people still download these?  Do I still bring anything to the table?

ALL I ASK
If I can ask for one holiday gift, please just pass my new mixes along to whomever might enjoy them.  I put a lot of work in to them.
If you can write about them, or know someone that can, please please please any press is great.  No blogs write about my mixes.  The internet is a deafening silence.

The blogs are filled with mixes that just don't interest me.  Bleeding-edge tracklists that aren't interesting and shoddy mixing.  Poorly thought-out transitions and massive key clashes abound.
I feel like I've produced something worthwhile.  The music world reflection tells me otherwise.
I've written to over a hundred music blogs in the past, but no replies.  There are thousands of people flogging their unheard masterpieces out there.

If you can signal boost, in any capacity, it would be greatly appreciated.

At the very least, I am going to keep working on my mixes since in the end I make them for me and me alone.  I got addicted to the joy of having other people love them too, and it is a harsh crash when expectations aren't met.
I will continue to work on producing local events here for my communities.  At least with that the change can feel palpable.  I'm not the anonymous millions on the internet flogging their toss-off mixes, I am actually doing real things with real people.
Real movement, real smiles.

Thanks for sticking with me for so long.  Let's see what 2012 has in store.

I wish you had been paying attention.

But here it is again.  This is your chance.

And now, the rest of the blog...

Anna Rose - My Body Is A Cage:  Smooth folk with the meditativene sorry of Kate Bush.

Artist Unknown - Burn (Fear of Tigers Remix):  All hands up for the europop funtimes!

Beat Culture - Before You Go:  Happy pianos out in the ocean always need more breakbeats

Bonnie Prince Billy - We Are Unhappy:  The new album is Wolfroy Goes To Town, and yes, *SPOILER ALERT* he is still unhappy.

Field Rotation - Regenzeit II:  The gorgeous little Regenzeit 10 is a gem for fans of ambient/classical/minimalist lovers out there.

Hackney Colliery Band - No Diggity:  Funk cover of the classic.  Seriously good.

Jeffrey Lewis - I Got Lost
Jeffrey Lewis - Time Trades:  A Turn in the Dream-Songs might not grace the best of 2011 lists, but oh it deserves a listen from everone.  There are quaint hypnotic nuggests of truth to be had.  And for those that need him and for whose lives will be changed, Jeffrey Lewis will be essential.

MC Chris - MC Chris Is Back ft Jesse Dangerously:  Race Wars has some absurdly amusing skits, but the star of the show here is really the guest appearance by one Jesse Dangerously stealing the show and then not giving it back.

Nicolas Jaar - Don't Break My Love:  New single from Jaar to melt minds and somehow increase global sales of beanbag chairs.  So amazing.

Radical Face - Always Gold:  Total pop action!

Sandro Perri - How Will I?:  Impossible Spaces is sprawling and haunting, like a proggier Bill Callahan meets a less-sleazy Toro Y Mori.  Highly recommended.

Sepalcure - See Me Feel Me:  Finally, the post-dubstep generation rediscovers the horror that is Tommy!

Silver Swans - Secrets (Number Stations Remix):  The pop layer was perfect enough as it in, but hey, let's dump the drugs all over it and we got ourselves a new kind of party!

Slyy - Booze Crooze:  The scene is the members of Stomp are in a bar, one thing leads to another...

The National - Think You Can Wait:  Amazing track from the Exile Vilify single.  Stunning.  The perfect way to wind up the year.

The chosen families series:
unofficial part 0:  Moonchild (in memoriam)
Part 1: Directions To My Special Place
Part 2: Glittering, Waiting
Part 3: Always More Than This
Part 4: Oh, Glorious Perversions
TOTAL:  7 hours of gorgeous music, all woven together.

These 5 mixes embody an aesthetic I call "dreamer beats", the evolution of which might have been obvious to anyone who follows my mp3 blog regularly.  It is more of a focus on emotional content, psychological meaning and production minutiae of the tracks than it is about the genres, which range from dubstep to witch house to idm to folk to breakbeats to dreamwave to rock to downtempo to whatever else.

Please share this far and wide, post on blogs, email out, etc etc etc.
This concludes the Chosen Families series and is the final release of 2011!  Stay tuned for "best of 2011" and the annual holiday music posts....

MP3 blog 2011/11/29

blog 2011/11/29 - navigating the dusk and the promises we all want to keep.

BIG NEWS PEOPLE.  A new mix is on the horizon.
Wednesday night at 9pm EST I will be debuting it at http://livestream.com/djcpi and you can listen (and comment if you want) to the world premier.
Participants will also got early access to download the new MP3.
Anyone who misses it will have to wait until December 5th.  Oh noes!

DETAILS: http://www.facebook.com/events/305817082775419/

A$AP Rocky - Purple Swag (Jim-E Stack Bootleg):  spooked out sticky single.

Beaunoise - Did I Kill Someone I Don't Know About:  Juvenile breakcorerycore.  Just the way we like it.

Bombay Bicycle Club - Lights Out, Words Gone:  A perfectly tender pop song from the new album A Different Kind Of Fix.

Fanfarlo - Replicate (Teletextile Remix):  An incredible remix with lush isntrumentation AND funny whistle sound.  I love it.

Groove Theory - Tell Me (George FitzGerald Remix):  I love sexy garagey sounds that aren't all overblown and BRO-INFUSED.

Heavy D & The Boyz - Nuttin But Love (Cookin Soul Remix)
Heavy D & The Boyz - We Got Our Own Thang (Cheapshot Tribute Remix):  R.I.P.

JLYMN - As of Yet:  fun washes of clickedy idm goodness!  I like that they didn't stop lovin' the synths.

Movits! - Vad Dom Än Säger:  Totally swingin' pop and yeah I have no idea what's going on.

Nuck Chorris - Blue:  Oh what is that?  More delicate instrumental beats?  OK!

Rebeka - Fail:  Annie Lennox for a new generation?

Rewards - Equal Dreams ft Solange Knowles (Eddie Mars Remix):   Yes, Beyonce's sister is totally cooler than Beyonce will ever be.

Savoir Adore - Dreamers:  Romantic pop, shimmering guitars, and a big payoff.

Say My Name - Badlands:  Moody downtown beats.

Slow Club - Beginners:  The new album Paradise doesn't have the same joy of the first album that I was looking for, alas.  But if you wanted them to develop a more brooding and complex sound, this might be for you.

Sun Glitters - Too Much To Lose (Slow Magic Remix):  The world of electro pop after the age of School Of Seven Bells and DJ Screw is a wonderful place to be.

The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble - Celladoor:  New album of dark jazz moods for gothy dinner parties!  From The Stairwell is out now and while I have never truly dug an entire album of their's, there are always many beautiful gems.

Wooden Sky - River Song One:  Oh and I love when we end on a tender folk song!

MP3 blog 2011/11/23

blog 2011/11/23 - a frame around the antlers that cradle us all.

A.Dd+ - Genocide:  It takes a careful balance to make claustrophic hiphop like this work, and I think they do it really well, even if they have a few Kanye production techniques bitten so obviously.

Beacon - No Body:  A touch of Thom Yorke whispering, but with an ohsomuchmore pleasing and nuzzling beat.

Boards of Canada - Olson (Wrm remix):  HOW COME NO ONE THOUGHT OF THIS BEFORE?  Super modern bass under BOC classics.  SO FUCKING GOOD.

City of Glass - Tourist:  Shades of U2 perhaps?  From the new The Diving Bell EP.

Cloud Nothings - No Future, No Past:  From Attack On Memory, this sounds like the normally upbeat Cloud Nothings took Japandroids, reduced them to a fine powder, and smoke them in a cigar.

Elbow - Buffalo Ghosts:  A b-side from the Open Arms single, this is another slowburner that you have to really let wash over you.

Goldfrapp - Rocket (Richard X One Zero Remix):  Total shiny electropop experience.  Strap on the mooboots and enter the future!

Jack Dixon - Coconuts:  Clicky dubby beats that often sound like they are on the verge of falling apart, but come together cohesively with a big smooth subbass lick.

Mates Of State - Palomino:  Another cut from that new Mountaintops record I haven't gotten around to listening to yet...  exhaltation to make even M83 take notice.

Nicki Minaj - Dopeman:  While I normally skip over the mounds of new Nicki I couldn't help but check this track out, and lo and behold as suspected she flips the classic dopeman sample and oh I can't resist.

Nóra - Opin fyrir morði:  Uhhh so it's from the album "Er einhver að hlusta?" and yeah I have no idea what they are saying.  oh Iceland!

Ripperton - The Sandbox:  Niwa blows always all expectations for Ripperton and is a producer's dream.  So many fabulous ideas played with and you can just feel how much he enjoyed making this album.

Sheila D Yeah and TT The Artist - Bad Bitches Drop It Low (Slick Shoota Remix):  I normally don't both with the juke ish, but this one kind of rocks my soft spots.

The Wonder Years - Coffee Eyes
The Wonder Years - My Life As A Pigeon:  High school, is that you?  "Suburbia I've Given You All and Now I'm Nothing" will make you feel like a kid again.  In a good way and a bad way.  Recommended!

Yamantaka // Sonic Titan - Queens:  YT//ST is at heart a pop album, but one that falls somewhere between Gang Gang Dance, The Boredoms and Bat For Lashes.  and yes, there is quite an amazing chasm there!  Highly recommended.

Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile - Attaboy
Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile - Helping Hand:  Staggeringly addictive Americana classical that will have you running out and buying a new sound system and referring to it as your "hi-fi".   Highly recommended!

MP3 blog 2011/11/18

blog 2011/11/18 - this week all falls apart but we have a frame at least

Yes yes, only 2 days since the last one, but omg there is just too much love in the world to stop now.

Channel Live - Mad Izm (Cheapshot Remix):  Ahhh the KRS-One styleeeeeeeeeeeee.  And the chimes and french horns.  Yes.

Dilo - An Iceberg And A Caribou (Sebastian Cohen Remix):  Uplifting techy meandering form the 2009 Waheira release.  So much stuff going on in this one.

DJ Shadow - I've Been Trying (Various I'm Done Trying Mix):  This ressurects that dark turn-of-century Ninja Tunes styles that made everyone's knees a bit wobbly.  From the new album I Gotta Rokk, this is the saviour of it all.

Dominant Legs - Where We Trip The Light:  At first jangles you might think it is Vampire Weekend, BUT NO!  You have made a terrible mistake.  From the album Invitation.

Ellie Goulding - The Writer (Live Acoustic Version):  I love this song, it was a track that really grew on me from her full length.  This one comes from the single of the same name, and any Tori Fan knows to mine the singles.

Gabriel Prokofiev - String Quartet No. 2 (Vex'd Remix):  Screw renditions of electronic tracks by classical musicians, we need more remixes of classical music by electronic musicians.

Guanaco ± - Lepidoptera:  From the new album Ardea Cinerea, gorgeous lush guitar work.

How To Dress Well - Suicide Dream 2 (Elite Gymnastics Baptism):  From "Just Once", Elite Gymnastics give us another taste of chillwave grooove.

Katie Kim - 500 Miles (The Pretenders cover):  Who'd have thought this song would sound so sensitive, so... NOT STALKERISH.

Lems - Footsteps:  Some fancy-pants piano breakbeats for breakfast.

Parenthetical Girls - Sympathy For Spastics:  They may not be for everyone's tastes, but oh I've taking a liking to the string of Privilege EPs.  Now we have "Privilege, Pt. IV: Sympathy For Spastics" and it's just as wonderful.  Recommended for anyone who likes their rock n roll done Cabaret style.

Rookie - Azure:  More smooth ninjabreak yumminess.

Sigur Rós - Svefn-g-englar (live):  Inni is a double-live collection.  Yup, this is the moneyshot.  If live albums are your thing, you can't really go wrong with the epicness of Sigur Rós.  And if Sigur Rós are your thing, you can't really go wrong with this live album.

Summer Camp - Ghost Train
Summer Camp - I Want You:  Total cutesiepop with a dark evil edge.

Tropics - Mouves (Botany Remix):  The stutterbeat reminds me of Radiohead's latest album.  Too bad those boys never got this sparkley.

MP3 blog 2011/11/16

blog 2011/11/16 - blarrrgggh the infection, she is spreading!

I am oh so sicky today.  Booooo.
But did I mention I am starting a quarterly queer dance party in Ottawa called Q-BOUNCE?
Join up at http://q-bounce.ca for further updates.  QUEER BASS UNDERGROUND, and all that fun stuff.

A$AP Rocky - Out of This World:  Super hypey rapper doesn't quite suck as everoyne wishes he did.  More News at 11.

Amy Lee - Halfway Down the Stairs (The Muppets cover)
Rachael Yamagata - I'm Going to Go Back There Someday (The Muppets cover)
Weezer - Rainbow Connection ft Hayley Williams (The Muppets cover):  I'll save you the temptation.  The Green Album is covers of Muppets classics by superstar adult contepmorary pop artists.  These are the best Muppet songs, and thankfully the artists that do them don't entirely butcher them, even though the production is straight-up Imogen Heap.  And if you can get by the bkacup vox on the Yamagata track sounding straight from a Glee soundtrack, it's one of the greatest emotional triggers ever.

Ane Brun - Do You Remember:  Yeah so here's the deal:  If you don't like this song you just have no soul.  Not in the "appropriating black culture" kind of way, but in the "omg you must be a spiritually devoid zombie beast" kind of way.

Bassnectar - Teleport Massive (RJD2 Remix):  The normally cold Bassnectar productions get some welcome warmth from breakbeat master RJD2.  So good.

Carrousel - 14:  Appropriately swelling singer/songwriter goodness.

Gem Club - Twins:  Chris Garneau emotiveness with a tender instrumental section.  From the new album Breakers.

GuMMy†Be_R! - Cognitive Ascension:  The new release TIME isn't so hot, but at least he hasn't abandoned his production aesthetic like so many of the other witchers.  This track is pretty hot.

James Vincent McMorrow - If I Had A Boat:    OK, so maybe I have a thing for emo male voices this week.

Kid Koala - Main Title Theme (Open Your Book)
Kid Koala - Speed of Light (Page 102):  Making a soundtrack to your book, with page references?  EXCELLENT IDEA.  Making it one of the most tender instrumental records of the year?  BESTEST IDEA.  Highly recomended.

Lana Del Rey - Video Games (Jamie Woon Remix):  The original is a touch silly. but Woon works it in all the right ways.

Male Bonding - Year's Not Long:  The new album Nothing Hurts falls somewhere between Dinosaur Jr. and Japandroids, but with the muffed out garage fuzz that I can't quite fully love yet.

Pole - Wipfel:  Hey!  Remember Pole?  Oh come on, you remember Pole....  Remember back when Clicks N Cuts was a thing?  No?  *sigh*  Oh you people.  Well he's back with Waldgeschichten and those that know will enjoy.

St. Vincent And The National - Sleep All Summer:  Yeah some duets are just handed to us straight from the gods.  srsly.

Sutekh - Fire Weather:  Evil dub minimal bass OK!

Warm Brew - Nothin From Nothin:  Feel good sunshine beats + rhymes for the dark days of November.

Zola Jesus - Lick The Palm Of The Burning Handshake
Zola Jesus - Shivers:  The new album Conatus doesn't quite do it for me like the last one.  Alas.  But I like these tracks.

THIS WEEK'S TRACKS

MP3 blog 2011/11/08

blog 2011/11/08 - sometimes its best to just enjoy your friend's dog and not get your own

Andy Stott - Posers:  Thumpmaster Andy is back with We Stay Together and yes, it is just as delicious as before.  Highly recommended for all beatheads with a sinister streak.

Being - Quiet Rain (The Green Kingdom Remix):  Being's ambience is always lovely, and it's great to see it get the rhythmic beatwash approach as well.   I hope they release more singles like this.

Christina Vantzou - And Instantly Take Effect
Christina Vantzou - Small Choir:  "No. 1"  has lush ambience in that majestic Robert Rich kind fo way.  A touch of newage synth, but more contemplative stuff that reminds me of the best of Being (see above!), with all of the lushness of organic instruments.

City of Satellites - Machine Is My Animal (Tin Manzano Remix):  Let's keep that mellow vibe and add a touch of gentle bass.  A perfect little Sunday-morning coffee-and-snuggles jam.

Das Racist - Michael Jackson
Das Racist - Shut Up, Man ft El-P
Das Racist - The Trick:  YEAH THAT'S RIGHT.  After the last few songs in this post, BOOM, MICHAEL JACKSON.  Fucking abrasive.  I wasn't in to this new single at first, but oh it grew on me.  And people have been slagging on the first proper full length Relax, but damn it is super fun and has lots of great stuff going on in it.  Fun is had!  Guests are invited!  Styles are flipped!

D-Jastic - Up To No Good (F^K Y3AH! Re-Bounce):  What, we can't say  Fuck Yeah?  And yes, I do love any song that drops classic breaks samples in to them.

Girls - Forgiveness:  "Father, Son, Holy Ghost" is an amazing new album.  It has the songwriting of hangover-era Ween albums, earnest delivery of the early 90s, teenage melodrama and ummm.. gospel choirs!  Perfect.  Highly recommended.

Lanterns On The Lake - Keep On Trying:  Something about the sound of the creaking floorboards in this that just makes it oh so downhome wholesome.  From Gracious Tide, Take Me Home.

Static - Corazon, Cristal:  Oh we are back in a section of the light and breezy.  The singing and warmth synth reminds me fondly of Morr Music's later releases.  From the new album Freedom Of Noise.

The Decemberists - Burying Davy
The Decemberists - Row Jimmy:  Newly release, "Long Live The King" EP follows The King Is Dead.  While not essential for music fans as a whole, all Decemberist fans should get this.  These aren't as polished, but still great songs.

Tom Waits - Bad as Me
Tom Waits - Talking at the Same Time:  BOW DOWN PEOPLE, "Bad as Me" IS OUT.  Tom Waits, living deity.  Get in line.

MP3 blog 2011/11/04

blog 2011/11/04 - breaching the threshhold means that yes, you'd be a jerk for complaining.

Active Child - Playing House:  The modern sleazyhipster R&B movement produces a handful of fun-yet-unsettling tracks.  At least they're big on the acapella front.  Like a sexed up James Blake with daddy issues and viagra?

Ambassadeurs - Rossler:  More sleazybeats, the sick depths of downtempo slink.

Angus and Julia Stone - Big Jet Plane (Stern Disco Remix):  Plodding electro pop for the Todd Terje fans out there.

Balam Acab - Apart
Balam Acab - Motion:  "Wander / Wonder" is the breakout album from the witchhouse scene.  Incredibley satisfying, while not ditching much of what made the earlier singles magical.  You'd expect something like this on Ninja Tune.  Highly recommended.

D. Gookin - Glad I Met You:  Oh I'm giddy on the beats today!  We drop the sleeze and pipe in some happyhappyjoyjoy synth bizness.  People, never be afraid to raise the HANDCLAPS up in the mix!

Giraffage - Moments:  GIRAFFAGE.  Use in a sentence?  Oh man what a wild party last night, there was so much sexy giraffage going down at that party!

Goldmund - Nihon:  I love me some delicate piano, but even more I love it when they mic all of the creaks of the sustain pedals and squeaking seat.

King Britt & Sister Gertrude Morgan - New World In My View:  From the True Blood soundtrack.  Don't hate me.  Come on, who can resist sexy gay vampires having hot gay vampire sex?

Mikal Cronin - Apathy:  Woah, took us this long to arrive at some straight-up pop?  hunh.

Orchestra of Spheres - Hypercube:  Amazing trancing percussion from Nonagonic Now.

Panic! At The Disco - C'mon (Fade):  Ben Folds pop core!

RAC - 1979 ft Liz Anjos (Smashing Pumpkins cover):  Oh come on, sure Corrigan is a douche but how can you resist this song?  The vocalist reminds of a typical Happy Hardcore singer, but it all still works and yes I still love RAC.

St. Vincent - These Days (Nico cover):  oh *heart* *heart* *heart* *heart* *heart* *heart* *heart* *heart*

The Black Ghosts - Water Will Find A Way:  I wasn't all in to the new album "When Animals Stare", but this song is strictly-by-the-books radio hit in the waiting.  And ummm wait, is that tuba?  Someone get these kids to drop the xylophone and up the dubstep remixes.

The XX - Insects (Rodaidh Mix):  B-side remixe from the VCR single.  Nothing new, but good enough for us salivating fangirls.

Tim Hecker - Sketch 1:  Dropped Pianos is a bit of a slump for Hecker, but grab it if you're a completist.

Tokyo Police Club - All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem cover)
Tokyo Police Club - Sweetness ft Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit (Jimmy Eat World cover):  TPC get jiggy with their 10x10x10 covers album.  While they aren't all zingers, these two are classics.  All My Friends is a perfect bittersweet anthem about adolescencent sentiment, and should probably be covered by every bad ever.  Check blog20100512 for the Franz Ferdinand version and blog20110105 for the Stephen Francis take on it.

MP3 blog 2011/10/27

blog 2011/10/27 - and these are the days we live in

Ash Black Bufflo - Misery Is The Pilgrim's Pasture:  Pulsing Glassian synths?   oh yes!  From the 2010 album Andasol.

Cut Hands - Backlash:  Holy shit awesome.  If you loved Konono, Cut Hands tosses in more tribal ala The Boredoms and revs up the dronenoise on Afro Noise 1.

Dan Mangan - Jeopardy
Dan Mangan - Post-War Blues
Dan Mangan - Starts With Them, Ends With Us:  I didn't love a lot of his prior stuff, save a few songs, but Oh Fortune is new and super strong and recommended.

Elbow - Open Arms (Live from St. Paul's Cathedral):  GORGEOUS.  From the Lippy Kids single.

Giraffage - Polar Bear:  Pumping IDM-esque bass music always get a thumbs up over here.

Hearts Revolution - Teenage Teardrops (Who Killed JR's Black Flash Remix):  80s handclaps and glitter dances all over your fucking face.

Jeffrey Lewis - Cult Boyfriend:  So fucking injokey, but oh it pulls all my heartstrings.  *le swoon*   I love this crazy little dork.  From the new album A Turn In The Dream-Songs.

Katie Herzig - Free My Mind:  Just some more addictive pop from the new album The Waking Sleep.

Moon Boots - Off My Mind (Rogue Vogue Remix):  Jazzy/soulful house is on the comeback, and about time!

Neil Young - After the Gold Rush (Live In Chicago 1992):  Probably my favourite version of this song I've heard, off the brand new live album.  From 1992.  Yeah.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Returnal (Voice by Antony):  I'll listen to anything with Antony, and this mournful piece is perfect.  Can you have imagined this ever happening?  Yeah, and Fennesz is on the b-side.  FUCKING AWESOME.

Soley - Dance:  The new album We Sink is full of that quirky indie sound.  Definitely check it out if you like Emily Wells and Yellow Ostrich.

Song Of Return - Trajectory:  Epic emo post-U2 sound from the new album Limits.

Static Radio NJ - Marc:  I don't listen to much harder rock stuff, but this track is amazing.  From the 2008 An Evening of Bad Decisions...

Tube & Berger & Oliver Klein - Trip To Togo:  Another total banger in the bunch, from the comp "It Began In Africa Volume 2".

Youth Lagoon - Seventeen:  OK, so I'm not gaga for the new selt-titled album, but this song fits right between my ears.

MP3 blog 2011/10/21

blog 2011/10/21 - I am ready for this all over and again and again and yes

Apparat - Goodbye
Apparat - Song Of Los:  The Devil's Walk isn't perfect, but you're in to the moodier lulling electronic of the 2nd half of Apparat's career, it does a great job of continuing in that vein.  There are a number of really great standouts for fans of pop-era Morr Music.

Automotive - Khapoor
Automotive - Klezmer:  Solid productions from the Khapoor EP, returns us to an error where the instruments and mood of a piece can really shine, like early Xploding Plastix and Amon Tobin.

Awesome Force - Priglashenya (live)
Deadbeatblast - Chiptunes In Toronto Track 1 (live):  I really wasn't expecting much.  I sift through a tonne of muisc that I don't expect much from.  But holy shit, Chiptunes In Toronto blew me away.  This album has sets by these two artists and 8-bit synthesis is just beyond compare.  Seriously addictive and highly recommended.

Class Actress - Love Me Like You Used To
Class Actress - Weekend:  Who likes pop?  Who likes synths?  Who likes a sweet chanteuse?  Yes, Rapprocher is indeed for you.  The album is bursting with pop goodness that will sound like a about-fricking-time Ladytron revival.  Recommend for:  bread baking kitchen dance parties.

Daniel Sex Jr. - Debbie Zen:  I love the clunking beats that remind me of my favourite Freescha tracks.

Danny Brown - Brown Eyes:  There's something kind of just messy about this track that is really appealing.

Eskmo - Cloudlight:  More post-Tobin cinematic clunky bass.  Crank up that sub and get queasy!

John Denver - Country Roads (Pretty Lights Remix):  Little known fact:  I am a big John Denver fan!  Dude was sweet.  While this song could do with being half the length, I'll take what I can get.  Get down get busy.

Labyrinth Ear - Amber:  Lovely chilled out pop, drenched in layers of twinklesynth.  Love love love.

St. Vincent - Cruel:  Another great single from Strange Mercy.  I really have to go listen to the full thing one day soon...

The Belle Comedians - Fewer Lights:  From the whirled intro synth you know this will be earnest and ecstatic fun.  From the new album Autumn Ought To...

The Horrors - Changing The Rain
The Horrors - Still Life:  Remember when I was kind of simultaneously blown away and overwhelmed by the last The Horrors album?  No?  Well I was.  But this time they've toned down the edge and put out an incredible rock/pop record that still has some grit and flourish, but is totally digestible and should cross over in a big way.  "Skying" will appeal to mopey brit rock fans and Canadian indieheads alike.  Recommended!

Young Galaxy - We Have Everything (Blue Hawaii Buh Buh Remix):  Did I mention I loved Young Galaxy and their fabulous new album Shapeshifting?  Well it's true, and lucky for me there is a number of excellent remixes out there.

MP3 blog 2011/10/17

blog 2011/10/17 - raining and glazing and flowers beneath it all

Basti Grub - African Gift:  Groovey slowed down house beat with mellow horns and wonderful chants!

Carbon Based Lifeforms - Arecibo:  Who remembers Instinct Ambient back in the 90s?  It was the druggged out technophile black sheep to the proggy and newage FAX Records CDs, and Carbon Based Lifeforms made some great sounds there.  They are back with a new album, Twentythree!

Charlotte Gainsbourg - Memoir
Charlotte Gainsbourg - Terrible Angels:  The Terrible Angels EP is short and sweet with 2 great new tracks, 2 live ones.

Holy Other - Touch (Blood Diamonds Remix):  Chopped + screwed chillwave is the bestest!

James Blake - Once We All Agree
James Blake & Bon Iver - Fall Creek Boys Choir:  The new Enough Thunder EP is a bit meh, but I like these 2 tracks.  First one is all subbass and piano.  2nd one is Bon Iver.  Good enough.

Male Bonding - Tame the Sun:  I'm not a huge Male Bonding fan, but this track off the new Endless Now reminds of the more naive DGC-grunge era of the 90s and that makes me happy.

Mates Of State - Maracas:  After their awesome CRUSHES cover album earlier this year, it looks like the new full length Mountaintops should be here soon!  This sounds great, and I'm excited for the album.

Midnight Conspiracy - Discord (The Chaotic Good Remix):  Harder electro house for that Daft Punky set.

Noah and the Whale - Life Is Life
Noah and the Whale - The Line
Noah and the Whale - Tonight's the Kind of Night:  The emotional roller coast ride in band form is back!  Last Night on Earth doesn't blow me away, but it is certainly much more than I expected.  I listened in to find the one song that I would love surrounded by some rubbish, but oh there are a handful of winners here.

The Drum - Omar:  Love the moody weezey beats!  From the Heavy Liquid EP.

The Good Natured - Wolves (Crystal Fighters Remix):  This leads in well from the above track, then busts out with all sorts of Architecture In Helsinki-styled pop goodness.  Love the pitched-up vox and the Hawaiin kitsch pads.

The Weather Station - Everything I Saw:  From the new album All Of It Was Mine, this is some dark traditional campfire folk for reals.

Unsub - Afterglow
Unsub - Silk Button:  Let's finish up with 2 very traditional dubstep tracks from the new Afterglow EP.  Traditional in their structure and composition, but expertly executed, and given the tripe that has been busting up everywhere lately, this is totally refreshing.

MP3 blog 2011/10/13

blog 2011/10/13 - off to Vermont tomorrow hurray!!

A double-update week!   Please excuse me but there was just a backlog of awesome to get to.

AFX - Quex-RD
Autechre - Skin Up You're Already Dead:  Who would expect a split EP between these 2 appearning in 2011?  And it being AWESOME?   Fabulous.

Austra - Lose It (Young Galaxy Remix):  I've said it before and I'll say it again, I really think Young Galaxy should have got the Polaris shortlist over Austra.  Blah.  Anyways, kiss kiss and makeup, because you sound oh so beautiful together.

Brown Shoe - Late Nights:  From The Gift Horse, just let it build and get all good and epicy at the end.

Chromeo - When The Night Falls (Hercules And Love Affair Remix):  Hercules & Love Affair have had some misses, but they have some top-notch production funk going on here, and I'm not even a Chromeo fan.

Cults & Superhuman Happiness - Um Canto de Afoxé para o Bloco d'Ilê:  Cute little collab from Red Hot + Rio 2.  Totally infectious.  You just try and frown, Mr. Grumpsalot.

Drop Life - Moon Shine:  Beatsmiths are a dime-a-dozen in this laptop studio word, but I keep digging for the gems like this track.

Girls - Vomit:  New Girls!  I wasn't a huge fan of the earlier stuff, but it seems like someone had a dark year.  Like more morose Dinosaur Jr.

Kathryn Calder - Who Are You:  More fantastic pop, from the new album Bright And Vivid.

Magic Arm - Outdoor Games:  Sweet and lulling pop, from 2009's Make Lists Do Something.

Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire - Huzzah! (Remix FT Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown & El-P):  Oh this is just so goofy.  Hilarious and perfect.

Ohbijou - Anser
Ohbijou - Sligo:  New album Metal Meets is out now and it's as sweet and beautiful as you expected.  Recommended!

RxRy - Aertigo Lapsees:  Off the Aertgo Lapsees single that apparently came out last year, but I just snagged it now.  RxRy is an electronic music producer in fine form.  Serve with the AFX/Autechre singles above....

St. Vincent - Surgeon:  I'm the first to admit I haven't loved anything she's done quite as much as her brilliant debut album, but I'm enjoying this new single from Strange Mercy, out now.

Star Slinger - Dutchie Courage:  And we close off with a sunshine bouncey bit of awesomeness, doing a fairly straight-ahead all-guns-bounce flip of the classic samples.
